The David Berger National Memorial honors a young man named David Mark Berger. He was 28 years old and born in the U.S. David was an Olympic weightlifter for Israel. He was one of 11 Israeli athletes who were killed in a terrible attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. This memorial remembers him and the ten other athletes who lost their lives.

The memorial features a special sculpture. It is made of black steel and looks like broken Olympic rings. This design shows how the Olympic Games were sadly interrupted by the tragic events. The sculpture rests on eleven separate parts. Each part stands for one of the athletes who was killed. A talented artist named David E. Davis created this sculpture.

About the Memorial's History

Where the Memorial Is Located

The sculpture was first placed in 1975. It stood on the front lawn of the Mayfield Jewish Community Center. This was at 3505 Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The U.S. government officially named it a national memorial on March 5, 1980.

In 2005, the Mayfield Center building was taken down. Because of this, the memorial had to be moved. It found a new home at the Mandel Jewish Community Center. This center is located at 26001 South Woodland Road in Beachwood, Ohio.

Who Manages the Memorial

The David Berger National Memorial is officially managed by the National Park Service. It falls under the care of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. However, the Mandel Jewish Community Center helps take care of the memorial every day.
