Early Life and Career

David Campbell Humphreys was born in Morgan County, Alabama. He started his career as a lawyer in Madison County, Alabama.

Serving in Alabama

Humphreys was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives several times. He served in 1843, 1849, 1853, and 1868. He also worked as a farmer, known as a planter, and had his own law practice. This was in Huntsville, Alabama, from 1850 to 1861.

During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, David Campbell Humphreys joined the Confederate States Army. He rose through the ranks to become a Colonel.

Becoming a Federal Judge

President Ulysses S. Grant chose David Campbell Humphreys for a special job. On April 22, 1870, he was nominated to be an Associate Justice. This was for the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia.

Confirmation and Service

The United States Senate approved his nomination on May 10, 1870. He officially received his job on May 13, 1870. He served as a judge until July 2, 1879. His time as a judge ended when he passed away in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Humphreys' Home

The house where David Campbell Humphreys lived in Huntsville, Alabama, was built in 1848. This historic home is called the Humphreys-Rodgers House. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This means it's an important place in American history.
