David Goodwillie (born 28 March 1989) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a striker for Glasgow United.
Goodwillie started his career at Dundee United, where he became a star player. He won awards for being the best young player in Scotland for the 2010–11 season. His great performances led to him playing for the Scotland national team. He was then signed by Blackburn Rovers, a team in the English Premier League, for £2 million.
After his time at Blackburn, he played for several other clubs. However, his career has been affected by off-field issues. In 2017, a civil court (a court that settles disagreements between people) found him responsible for causing serious harm to a woman. This ruling has caused a lot of public disagreement and has impacted which teams have been willing to sign him.

Club Career
Dundee United

David Goodwillie was born in Stirling, Scotland. He joined the youth team of Dundee United in 2003 when he was 14. He made his first official appearance for the main team in December 2005. In March 2006, he scored his first goal for the club against Hibernian.
In the 2007–08 season, Goodwillie went on loan to Raith Rovers, where he scored nine goals. He returned to Dundee United and became a key player. In the 2009–10 season, he scored 12 goals and helped United win the Scottish Cup. He even scored the first goal in the final match.
The next season, 2010–11, was his best. He scored 17 goals and won both the SPFA Young Player of the Year and SFWA Young Player of the Year awards. His success attracted attention from bigger clubs.
Blackburn Rovers and Loans
In August 2011, Goodwillie signed a four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers, who were in the Premier League. His manager at the time compared him to a "young Wayne Rooney". He scored his first goal for Blackburn in a League Cup match. He scored a total of five goals for the club.
During his time with Blackburn, Goodwillie was sent on loan to other clubs to get more playing time. He had short spells at Crystal Palace, a second time at Dundee United, and Blackpool. He left Blackburn in June 2014.
Return to Scotland
In July 2014, Goodwillie signed for Aberdeen. He played there for two seasons, scoring eight goals. He also had a brief loan spell at Ross County in 2016.
He then moved to England again to play for Plymouth Argyle in June 2016. He left the club in January 2017. His departure came after a civil court case where a judge ruled against him. The club stated that Goodwillie asked to leave.
Clyde
In March 2017, Goodwillie joined Clyde in Scottish League Two. He became a very important player for the team. He was named club captain and became one of their top goalscorers of all time. In one amazing game, he scored five goals. By the time he left, he had scored 109 goals for Clyde in 176 appearances.
Career Controversy
In January 2022, Goodwillie signed for Raith Rovers. This decision caused a huge public outcry because of the 2017 civil court ruling against him. Many important people connected to the club, including staff, volunteers, and the sponsor, left in protest. The club's women's team also cut its ties with Raith Rovers. Because of the negative reaction, the club announced that Goodwillie would not play for them.
He was loaned back to Clyde, but this was also cancelled after more protests. He was officially released from his Raith Rovers contract in September 2022.
Since then, several clubs have tried to sign him, but these deals were quickly cancelled due to public disapproval. He played one game for Livingston United in 2022 and one game for English club Radcliffe in 2023. An Australian club, Sorrento FC, also announced his signing in 2023 but cancelled the contract hours later.
In July 2023, he began playing for Glasgow United. The club decided to stand by him despite warnings from local officials.
International Career
Goodwillie played for Scotland's youth teams before making his first appearance for the main national team in November 2010.
His international career was paused for a time due to off-field issues. After these were resolved in court, he was called back to the team.
On October 11, 2011, he scored his first and only goal for Scotland. It was a penalty kick against Spain, who were the world champions at the time. He scored with his very first touch of the ball after coming on as a substitute.
