David Ian Hewlett (born 18 April 1968) is an actor, writer, and director. He was born in England and also has Canadian and American citizenship. He is best known for playing Dr. Rodney McKay in the Stargate science-fiction shows.
David Hewlett first became well-known for his role as Grant Jansky in the Canadian TV series Traders (1996–2000). He also starred as David Worth in the Canadian thriller film Cube (1997). You might have also seen him in the horror film Pin (1988) or the science-fiction movies Scanners II: The New Order (1991) and Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011).

Early Life and Computer Fun
David Hewlett was born in Redhill, England. When he was four years old, his family moved to Canada.
He got his first computer when he was a teenager. He often called himself a "computer nerd" because he loved technology so much. While in high school in Toronto, he started acting in student films. He left high school early, at age sixteen in 1984, to focus on acting and computers.
Before he became a full-time actor, David also ran a website design company called Darkyl Media. He also started Fusefilm.com, which was an online community for people who make movies.
David's Acting and Directing Career
David Hewlett has appeared in many films, including some horror movies like The Darkside and Pin. He also had guest roles in several TV shows.
In 1996, he got a big role as Grant Jansky on the TV show Traders. A year later, in 1997, he worked with director Vincenzo Natali again. He starred in the popular thriller Cube as Worth, an architect. This Canadian film was made with a small budget but became very successful.
David is a big fan of science fiction. He has said that the British show Doctor Who made him love the genre. He even made his own sci-fi movies with friends when he was younger. His dream of working in science fiction came true when he joined Stargate SG-1. He had a guest role as Rodney McKay, an expert on the Stargate. This role later became a main part in the show Stargate Atlantis.
In 2007, David Hewlett was a guest star in the first episode of Sanctuary. This show was made by and starred Amanda Tapping, who also worked on Stargate.
In 2006, David wrote and directed a movie called A Dog's Breakfast. He starred in it along with his sister Kate Hewlett and his dog, Mars. Some of his Stargate Atlantis co-stars, like Paul McGillion, Christopher Judge, and Rachel Luttrell, were also in the film. David also started a YouTube channel called Fanatical in 2006.
In 2014, David directed another movie, a science-fiction horror film called Debug. It starred Jason Momoa, who was also in Stargate Atlantis.
David continues to be interested in making films. In 2015, he appeared in the Syfy TV series Dark Matter. He played Tabor Calchek, a merchant who helped the main characters. In 2017, he made a short sci-fi comedy called "HEWLOGRAM."

Family Life
David Hewlett was married to actress Soo Garay from 2000 to 2004. He then married Jane Loughman in 2008. They have one child together.
David's younger sister is actress Kate Hewlett. She has appeared on Stargate Atlantis many times, playing Rodney McKay's sister, Jeannie Miller. When David is not busy filming, he helps out at a school club. This club is for kids who are interested in things like 3D printing, computer programming, and fixing old tech equipment.
