David Lewis (born October 19, 1916 – died December 11, 2000) was an American actor. He was most famous for playing Edward Quartermaine on the TV show General Hospital from 1978 to 1993.
Early Life
David Lewis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Acting on Television
Lewis was one of the first actors to work in television. His very first TV role was in 1949 on a show called Captain Video and His Video Rangers.
He appeared in many popular TV shows. He was in seven episodes of Perry Mason. He also played Warden Crichton in the Batman TV series.
David Lewis also acted in daytime TV shows, known as soap operas. He was on Love of Life and later played Henry Pierce on Bright Promise. He also had short guest roles on The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives.
In 1978, Lewis joined the cast of General Hospital. He played the character Edward Quartermaine. For this role, he won a special award called a Daytime Emmy Award in 1982. The award was for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama.
Lewis took a break from the show between 1987 and 1988 to get better after being sick. He left the show in 1989. His character, Edward, was thought to be gone. But Lewis still went to the studio to record his voice. This way, his character's wife, Lila, could still talk to him on the show.
Lewis came back to General Hospital in November 1991. His character, Edward, returned to the show. In the summer of 1993, Lewis announced he was retiring from acting for good.
Lewis also played Charles Ames on the ABC comedy show The Farmer's Daughter from 1963 to 1966.
Later Years and Death
David Lewis passed away in Woodland Hills, California. He had been sick for a long time.
