David Malangi (1927–1999) was an important Indigenous Australian artist. He was a member of the Yolngu people from the Northern Territory. David Malangi became famous for his bark paintings. He was one of the most well-known artists from Arnhem Land. His art is a big part of modern Indigenous Australian art. He was born in a place called Mulanga, near the Glyde River.

Malangi painted on backgrounds that were clear, red, or black. He used strong, wide brushstrokes in his art. This made his paintings stand out from others. His artworks often showed animals like the sea eagle, crow, snake, and goanna.

David Malangi's art was shown around the world. In 1983, he represented Australia at the São Paulo Art Biennial. This is a very important art show. He was also one of the first Aboriginal artists to have his work in the Biennale of Sydney in 1979.

In 1983, his art was shown at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. He also created ten special hollow logs for the National Gallery of Australia in 1988. This was part of the Aboriginal Memorial. In the same year, he traveled to New York City. His art was part of a big exhibition called Dreamings. In 2004, a special exhibition of his work opened at the National Gallery of Australia. It was called No Ordinary Place.

Australian One Dollar Note

One of David Malangi's designs was used on the back of the Australian one dollar note. This happened in 1966. At first, this was done without him knowing. But in 1967, his contribution was officially recognized.

He later received money for his design. This happened after the head of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Dr H. C. Coombs, helped. Malangi also received a special medal. The image on the note shows a special ceremony. It is about an ancestor (a person from the past) named Gurrmirringu.

This event was important for copyright in Australia. It helped start discussions about protecting the art and designs of Aboriginal artists.
