David John Meyler (born 29 May 1989) is a former professional footballer from Ireland. He played as a central midfielder, which is a player who helps both in defense and attack.

David started his professional football journey at Cork City in Ireland. Later, he moved to Sunderland, a team in the top English league, the Premier League, in 2008. After a loan period, he joined Hull City permanently in 2013.

He then played for Reading in 2018. He finished his playing career in 2019 after a short loan spell at Coventry City. David also proudly played 26 games for the Republic of Ireland between 2012 and 2018.

Early Life and Family

David Meyler was born in Cork, Ireland. His mother is Stella Bowles, and his father is John Meyler. John Meyler was also a famous sportsman in Ireland, playing both Gaelic football and hurling.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Cork City

David grew up playing in the youth teams at Cork City. He signed his first professional contract with them in 2008. He played three games for Cork City, with his first game being a cup match against Limerick in June 2008.

Moving to Sunderland

In July 2008, David joined Sunderland. He was their third new player that summer. It took about a year and a half for David to play his first game for Sunderland. This happened on 28 December 2009 against Blackburn Rovers.

In his third game for Sunderland, he was sent off with a red card. Later, he suffered a serious knee injury while playing against Manchester United in May 2010. This injury kept him out of the game for a long time.

However, David recovered faster than expected. He returned to play for Sunderland's reserve team in November 2010. He even played in a first-team game against Fulham. But in January 2011, he injured the same knee again. Luckily, this injury was not as bad as first thought, and he was back on the bench by April 2011.

During the 2011–12 season, David slowly returned to full fitness. He played in several reserve games and made some short appearances as a substitute in first-team matches. In February 2012, he started a game against Stoke City. During this game, an opposing player received a red card for a challenge on David.

Time at Hull City

On 8 November 2012, David joined Hull City on loan. He was reunited with his former manager, Steve Bruce. He made his first appearance for Hull City as a substitute against Cardiff City on 10 November 2012.

David scored his first goal for Hull City on 8 December 2012 in a game against Watford. He scored again in the next game against Huddersfield Town. In January 2013, Hull City signed David permanently.

On 1 December 2013, David scored his first goal in the Premier League for Hull City against Liverpool. In March 2014, he had a disagreement with Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew during a game. A few days later, after scoring a goal in an FA Cup game, David playfully tapped the corner flag with his head to remember the incident.

In April 2014, he scored a goal in Hull's 5–3 FA Cup semi-final win against Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium. He also started in the 2014 FA Cup Final against Arsenal in May 2014.

David signed a new two-year contract with Hull City in January 2016. He left Hull City at the end of the 2017–18 season.

Playing for Reading

On 5 June 2018, Reading announced that David Meyler would be joining their team. He signed a two-year contract. David left Reading in July 2019 after his contract ended by agreement.

Loan to Coventry City

In January 2019, David joined Coventry City on loan until the end of the 2018–19 season.

Retirement from Football

On 30 August 2019, David Meyler announced that he was retiring from professional football.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, David Meyler started coaching. In March 2023, he joined the academy staff at Hull City. He began as a coach for the Under-15s team. Now, he is the assistant manager for the Under-18s team.

International Career

David Meyler first played for the Republic of Ireland U21 team in February 2009. This was a game against Germany that ended in a 1–1 draw. He was supposed to join the senior national team, but his first knee injury stopped him.

On 1 September 2012, David was called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad. He made his first senior international appearance on 11 September 2012. This was in a 4–1 win against Oman. He also represented Ireland at the 2016 Euro tournament. Ireland lost to France in the round of 16.
