David's Early Life and Moving to Canada
David Nykl was born in Prague, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. His mother was a nurse, and his father was an engineer. In 1968, when David was very young, his family left Czechoslovakia. This was after a big event called the Prague Spring, when the Soviet Union sent soldiers into the country.
His family moved to Canada and settled in Victoria, British Columbia. David later went to the University of British Columbia. He studied subjects like liberal arts and marketing, but he didn't finish his degree there.
David's Acting Career
David Nykl has worked a lot in both Vancouver, Canada, and Prague, Czech Republic. He has been in many theater plays, movies, and TV shows. People know him for being able to play many different kinds of characters. He has also helped create theater and film projects. In 1994, he even started a theater company in Prague called Misery Loves Company Theatre.
Famous Roles in Science Fiction
Many science fiction fans know David Nykl as Dr. Radek Zelenka from the TV series Stargate Atlantis. In the show, he plays a Czech scientist who is part of an Earth team exploring the lost city of Atlantis. His character often works with another main scientist, Dr. Rodney McKay. They sometimes have funny disagreements, which makes the show interesting. David also played Dr. Zelenka in one episode of Stargate SG-1 called "The Pegasus Project."
David is very good at languages. He can speak Czech, English, French, and Spanish fluently. Even though his character Dr. Zelenka speaks English with a Czech accent, David usually speaks with a Canadian accent in real life. When Dr. Zelenka spoke Czech in Stargate Atlantis, David would translate the lines from English into Czech himself.
In 2012, David also appeared in an episode of the TV show "Once Upon A Time." He played a dock worker who was turned into a fish by a character named Cora.
