David Andrew Platt (born 10 June 1966) is a famous English football player and coach. He played as a midfielder, known for scoring many goals from the middle of the field.
Born in Chadderton, England, Platt started his career at Manchester United. He then moved to Crewe Alexandra, where he became known for his goal-scoring ability. At 22, he joined Aston Villa and soon caught the eye of the England manager, Bobby Robson.
Platt became very famous during the 1990 FIFA World Cup. His great performances and important goals, scored with both his head and feet, made him a star. After the World Cup, he moved to Italy to play for Serie A club Bari in 1991.
He later played for Juventus and Sampdoria in Italy. In 1995, he returned to England to play for Arsenal. With Arsenal, he helped the team win the Premier League and FA Cup in 1998.
After his playing career, Platt became a manager for clubs like Sampdoria and Nottingham Forest. He also managed England's Under-21 team. Later, he worked as a coach for Manchester City.

Early Days and Rise to Fame
David Platt joined Manchester United as a young player in 1982. He was offered a professional contract in 1984. However, he left the club in 1985 without playing for their main team.
He then joined Crewe Alexandra in a lower division. There, he quickly became a key player. He was a strong midfielder who scored many goals. In three years, he played 134 games and scored 55 goals for Crewe.
Shining at Aston Villa
In 1988, Platt moved to Aston Villa for £200,000. He helped Villa get promoted to the top division that same season. He continued to score lots of goals for Villa.
In the 1989–90 season, he helped them almost win the league title, finishing second. For his excellent play, he was voted the best player by other footballers that year. He scored 50 goals in 121 league games for Aston Villa.
Adventures in Italian Football
On 21 July 1991, David Platt moved to Italy to play for A.S. Bari in Serie A, Italy's top league. He was even made captain and wore the number 10 shirt. He scored 11 goals in his first season.
In 1992, Platt joined Juventus, one of Italy's biggest clubs. He helped Juventus win the UEFA Cup, a big European competition. He played in important matches during their winning run.

In the 1997–98 season, new players joined Arsenal, which meant Platt played less often. However, he still made important contributions. He scored a winning goal against Manchester United in a 3–2 victory. That season, Arsenal won both the Premier League and the FA Cup. Platt's last game for Arsenal was the 1998 FA Cup Final.

1990 FIFA World Cup Highlights
David Platt earned his first England cap in 1989. He was then chosen for the England squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
England was in a group with Ireland, the Netherlands, and Egypt. Platt came on as a substitute in two games. England won their group and moved on to play Belgium. The game was 0–0 after 90 minutes. Platt came on as a substitute in extra time. In the very last minute, he scored a fantastic volley from a Paul Gascoigne free-kick. It was his first goal for England and a truly memorable moment!
In the next game, a quarter-final against Cameroon, Platt started the match. He scored the first goal with a header. England won 3–2 after extra time.
Platt also played in the semi-final against West Germany. The game ended 1–1 and went to a penalty shootout. Platt scored England's third penalty, but England lost the shootout and were knocked out.
Platt scored his third goal of the tournament in the third-place play-off against Italy. He scored with a powerful header. He ended the World Cup as one of England's top players.
UEFA Euro 1992 and Beyond
Platt often captained England during this time. He was known for his tireless running and good passing. He scored important goals in qualifying games for UEFA Euro 1992. He also scored against big teams like the USSR, Argentina, and Brazil in friendly matches.
At the Euro 1992 tournament, England was in a tough group. Platt had chances to score in the first two games, which ended in 0–0 draws. In the final group game against hosts Sweden, Platt scored the opening goal. However, Sweden came back to win 2–1, and England was eliminated.

Platt continued to be a key player for England in the qualifiers for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He scored seven goals in this campaign. This included four goals in a big 6–0 win against San Marino.
In a crucial game against the Netherlands, Platt scored to put England 2–0 up. However, the Dutch fought back to draw 2–2. England eventually failed to qualify for the World Cup, finishing third in their group.
UEFA Euro 1996 and Retirement
For UEFA Euro 1996, England's new manager, Terry Venables, still included Platt in his squad. Platt scored his 27th and final goal for England in a warm-up game against Hungary. This made him one of England's highest-scoring midfielders ever.
Platt mostly came on as a substitute during Euro 1996. He started the quarter-final against Spain and the semi-final against Germany. The semi-final against Germany ended 1–1 after extra time. Just like in 1990, the game went to penalties. Platt scored his penalty, but England lost the shootout again. Soon after, Platt retired from international football, having played 62 games and scored 27 goals for his country.
Life After Playing: Managing and Coaching
Managerial Roles
After retiring from playing, David Platt quickly became a manager. He returned to Sampdoria in Italy as manager in 1998. This was a short and challenging time for him.
In 1999, Platt became the player-manager of Nottingham Forest. He even played a few games for them. He managed Forest for two seasons.
From 2001 to 2004, Platt managed the England U21 team. He led them to qualify for the U-21 European Championships in 2002.
Coaching and Media Work
On 1 July 2010, Platt joined Manchester City as a first-team coach, working with manager Roberto Mancini. He left this role in 2013 when Mancini departed.
Platt has also worked as a football pundit, sharing his opinions on games and tactics. He even wrote a regular column for FourFourTwo magazine.
In 2015, Platt became the head coach of FC Pune City in the Indian Super League. He coached them for one season. In 2018, he worked as a club consultant for U.S. Città di Palermo in Italy.
