Playing Career Highlights

Starting Out: Manchester United and Crewe Alexandra

David Platt joined Manchester United as a young player in 1982. He was offered a professional contract in 1984. However, he left in 1985 without playing for their main team.

He then joined Crewe Alexandra in the Fourth Division. Platt quickly became a key player, known for his strong runs and many goals. In three years, he played 134 league games and scored 55 goals.

Success at Aston Villa

In February 1988, Platt moved to Aston Villa for £200,000. He helped them get promoted to the First Division that same season.

Platt scored many goals for Villa, helping them become a strong team again. In the 1989–90 season, they almost won the league title, finishing second. Platt was even voted the PFA Players' Player of the Year by other players. He played 121 league games for Villa, scoring 50 goals.

Playing in Italy: Bari, Juventus, and Sampdoria

In July 1991, David Platt moved to Italy to play for A.S. Bari in Serie A. He became the team captain and scored 11 goals in his first season. However, Bari was relegated to a lower league.

In June 1992, Platt joined Juventus for £6.5 million. He helped the team win the UEFA Cup in 1993. He played in several matches during their winning run.

After one season with Juventus, Platt moved to Sampdoria in July 1993. He won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) with Sampdoria in 1994. During his time in Italy, he became a very skilled player, good at dribbling, passing, and scoring. He played 55 league games for Sampdoria, scoring 17 goals.

Returning Home: Arsenal

Platt came back to England in July 1995, joining Arsenal for £4.75 million. The manager, Bruce Rioch, really wanted him to join the team.

In his first season, Arsenal finished fifth in the league. The next season, Arsène Wenger became the manager. Platt played regularly, often alongside Patrick Vieira in midfield.

In the 1997–98 season, Arsenal signed more midfielders, which meant Platt played less. However, he still made an important contribution. He scored a winning header against Manchester United in a 3–2 victory. That season, Arsenal won both the Premier League and the FA Cup. Platt's last match was the 1998 FA Cup Final. He then decided to retire from playing to study coaching.

Short Stint at Nottingham Forest

In July 1999, Platt became the player-manager for Nottingham Forest. This meant he was both a player and the manager. He played a few games for them before fully focusing on managing.

International Career with England

1990 World Cup

David Platt played his first game for England in November 1989. He was then chosen for the England squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

In the World Cup, England was in a group with Ireland, the Netherlands, and Egypt. Platt came on as a substitute in two games. England won their group.

In the next round, England played against Belgium. The game was 0–0 after 90 minutes, so it went into extra time. Platt came on as a substitute. In the very last minute of extra time, he scored a fantastic goal from a Paul Gascoigne free-kick. This was his first goal for England and it won the game!

In the quarter-final against Cameroon, Platt started the game. He scored the first goal with a header. England won 3–2 after extra time.

Platt also played in the semi-final against West Germany. The game ended 1–1 and went to a penalty shootout. Platt scored England's third penalty, but England lost the shootout and were knocked out.

He scored his third goal of the tournament in the third-place play-off against Italy. Platt ended the World Cup as a key player for England.

Euro 1992

Platt often captained the England team during this time. He was known for his hard work and good passing. He scored a goal in the qualifying rounds for UEFA Euro 1992. He also scored in friendly games against teams like the Soviet Union, Argentina, Brazil, and Finland.

At the UEFA Euro 1992 tournament, England was in a group with Sweden, France, and Denmark. England drew their first two games 0–0. To reach the semi-finals, they needed to beat hosts Sweden. Platt scored the opening goal early in the game. However, Sweden came back to win 2–1, and England was eliminated.

1994 World Cup Qualifying

England tried to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Platt scored the first goal in their opening game against Norway, which ended in a 1–1 draw. He scored four goals in a big 6–0 win against San Marino. He also scored in a 2–0 away win against Turkey.

In a crucial home game against the Netherlands, Platt scored to put England 2–0 up, but the game ended 2–2. England struggled in 1993, losing to Norway and drawing with Poland.

Platt scored against Brazil and Germany in a tournament in the United States. Despite his efforts, England finished third in their qualifying group and did not make it to the 1994 World Cup. Platt scored seven goals in this qualifying campaign.

Euro 1996

Terry Venables became the new England manager and kept Platt in his squad. Platt scored his first goal under Venables in March 1994 against Denmark. He also scored against Greece and Nigeria.

However, new players like Steve McManaman and Darren Anderton emerged. By UEFA Euro 1996, Platt was often a substitute. In a warm-up game against Hungary, he scored his 27th and final goal for England. This made him one of England's highest-scoring midfielders.

Platt started the quarter-final against Spain and the semi-final against Germany. In the semi-final, he played for 120 minutes. The game ended 1–1 and went to penalties. Just like in 1990, Platt scored his penalty against Germany, but England lost the shootout. Platt retired from international football soon after, having played 62 games and scored 27 goals for his country.
