The Historic David Sutherland House
The David Sutherland House is located on Angola Road in Cornwall. It was built in 1770 using fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. The house has since been painted white and had some additions built onto it.
A Glimpse into the Past
David Sutherland was a descendant of William Sutherland, one of the first settlers in Cornwall. The Sutherland family once owned a lot of land in the area. Over time, they lost much of it. However, some family members managed to keep or buy back smaller pieces of land. David built his house on one of these smaller plots. Today, the house stands on a lot that is about three-quarters of an acre. Because the house is on a steep hillside, it doesn't have a cellar. The top floor is actually at ground level in the back!
What Makes It Special?
The David Sutherland House has stayed mostly the same since it was built. It is on the north side of Angola Road. It's about halfway between downtown Cornwall and US 9W. You can find other Sutherland family homes nearby. David's grandson Daniel's house is a short distance northeast. His son Joseph's home, Cromwell Manor, is about a mile southwest.
Inside the David Sutherland House, you can still see some original features. There's an original fireplace with a fancy Federal style mantel. Some of the old doors are still there, along with timber supports in the kitchen.
A Home Through Time
In 1784, David Sutherland sold the house to his nephew, Patrick Sutherland. Patrick was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was an important person in Cornwall. Records show that the Town Board, which helps run the town, met at his house several times. They met there in 1798 and again between 1800 and 1805.
In 1806, Patrick left the Cornwall area and moved to the Finger Lakes region of New York. Since then, the David Sutherland House has had many different owners. In 1996, this historic home was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important part of American history.
