David Williams (born November 21, 1950 – died March 6, 2009) was a talented American musician. He was a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He became famous for playing guitar for huge music stars like Madonna and Michael Jackson.

David Williams' Music Journey
David Williams grew up in Newport News, Virginia. When he was young, he loved jazz music. Artists like Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery inspired him.
He started his music career with a group called the Dells. But his journey was paused when he served in the Vietnam War. After returning in 1972, he moved to Los Angeles. There, he joined up with the Dells again. He also worked with another famous group, the Temptations.
Forming Chanson
Later, David Williams started his own R&B group called Chanson. He formed it with bassist James Jamerson, Jr.. In 1978, Chanson released a song called "Don't Hold Back." This song became quite popular. It reached high spots on different music charts.
Playing for Michael Jackson
David's big break came when Michael Jackson heard his guitar playing. A music scout named Everett "Blood" Hollins was impressed by Chanson. He told Michael Jackson about David.
David was then hired to play on Michael Jackson's 1979 album, Off the Wall. He also played on almost every song for the Jacksons' 1980 album, Triumph. David even joined the Jacksons on their 1981 concert tour. He also played on their live album, The Jacksons Live!
In 1982, David Williams played on Michael Jackson's super famous album, Thriller. His unique guitar style can be heard on the hit song "Billie Jean." He also played on Michael Jackson's 1987 album, Bad. This album included popular songs like "Bad", "Dirty Diana", and "Smooth Criminal".
Working with Many Stars
After his success with Michael Jackson, David Williams became one of the most wanted guitarists. For the next ten years, he recorded music with many other famous artists. These included Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Julio Iglesias, George Benson, the Manhattan Transfer, Michael McDonald, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Dionne Warwick, Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney, Whitney Houston, and many more!
Music in Movies
David also contributed to movies. He sang lead on a song called "No Negatives of You." He helped write this song. It was used in the 1987 comedy movie Terminal Exposure.
Even though he played on tours with Michael Jackson and Madonna, David Williams mostly worked behind the scenes. He was a "session player," meaning he played on recordings for other artists.
David Williams passed away on March 6, 2009, in Hampton, Virginia. He was 58 years old. This was about three months before Michael Jackson's death.
