Raise Your Voice is a 2004 American teen musical drama film. It was directed by Sean McNamara. The movie stars Hilary Duff as the main character. The Canadian rock band Three Days Grace also appears in the film. They perform two songs: "Are You Ready" and "Home".

The Story of Raise Your Voice

Terri's Big Dream

Terri Fletcher is a teenager from Flagstaff, Arizona. She loves to sing and dreams of becoming a professional singer. She wants to join a special music program. This program could give her a $10,000 scholarship for her future.

However, Terri's father, Simon, is very protective. He owns a family restaurant and wants Terri to take it over. Simon does not approve of her singing dreams. He thinks that being a singer is not a good career choice. He believes Terri will be safer if she stays home and helps with the family business.

Terri's older brother, Paul, fully supports her dream. He and their father often argue about it. One day, after Paul's graduation barbecue, he and Simon have a big fight. Simon grounds Paul, meaning he can't leave the house.

That night, Terri secretly takes Paul out to a Three Days Grace concert. On their way back home, they are in a car accident caused by a careless driver. Terri wakes up in the hospital. She then learns that Paul was killed in the accident.

A Difficult Summer

Terri feels very guilty about Paul's death. She wants to stop singing and not go to the music program anymore. But her mother, Frances, tells her it's not her fault. She reminds Terri that Paul would have wanted her to follow her dream.

Frances convinces Terri to go to the program. She tells Simon that Terri will be staying with her aunt Nina in Palm Desert, California. But Terri actually goes to Los Angeles for the music program.

When Terri arrives in Los Angeles, she faces some challenges. Her jacket gets stolen, and her taxi driver is grumpy. At first, she even has trouble getting into the music school.

Finding Her Voice

During the program, Terri makes new friends. There's DJ Kiwi, who is fun-loving, and Sloane, a quiet pianist. Her roommate, Denise, is a very talented violinist. Terri learns a lot about music. But she also keeps having sad memories of the car crash.

Terri also starts to like Jay, a British songwriter. He likes her too. However, Robin Childers, who was with Jay the summer before, causes problems. Robin still likes Jay, but he doesn't feel the same way. Jay tries to get Robin to leave him and Terri alone.

One time, Robin kisses Jay just as Terri walks in. Jay pushes Robin away, but Terri runs off, upset. Jay tries to explain that the kiss meant nothing. Later, Jay apologizes, and Terri agrees to finish the song they were writing together. This song is for the scholarship contest.

Meanwhile, Terri's father, Simon, finds out she lied. He becomes very angry. He drives to Los Angeles to bring Terri home. On the final day of the program, Simon arrives at the school. He starts packing Terri's things. He scolds her for tricking him and for turning his wife and sister against him.

Terri begs her father not to make the same mistake he made with Paul. She asks him not to ruin her summer. Simon realizes he has been selfish. He changes his mind and lets her stay.

Terri and Jay perform the song they wrote. They dedicate it to Paul. Denise wins the scholarship prize, but Simon is still very proud of Terri. He is happy that her last memory of Paul is a good one, from the concert, not their argument. Terri's teachers hope to see her next year. Simon says they just might. The movie ends with all the students performing together happily.

Meet the Cast

The Music

A soundtrack album for Raise Your Voice was planned. However, it was never officially released. This is because Hilary Duff released her own album, Hilary Duff, which included many of the songs from the film.

Three Days Grace also contributed two songs to the movie. These were "Are You Ready" and "Home". "Home" is from their first album, Three Days Grace.
