Davina Michelle's Music Journey
Davina Michelle was named after famous people: actress Michelle Pfeiffer and TV presenter Davina McCall. She grew up in a family with three children. When she was about four years old, she was a big fan of Britney Spears. She secretly dreamed of becoming a singer like Britney.
Early Singing and YouTube
In high school, her music teacher encouraged her to sing. She started performing for a webcam, but she did not share these videos with her classmates. For her 18th birthday, she asked her parents for a microphone and better software. She then posted her recordings online. Her friends and family loved them. A music production group called Sub-Bass Music Group also noticed her talent.
In 2016, Davina Michelle tried out for the fifth season of Idols, a TV singing competition. She sang "Nobody's Perfect" by Jessie J for her audition. She made it through a few rounds but was eliminated later in the show.
Becoming a YouTube Star
In February 2017, Davina Michelle started her own YouTube channel. She decided to upload a cover version of an English song every week. On August 21, 2017, she posted her cover of "What About Us" by the American singer Pink.
In October 2017, Glamour magazine shared a video where Pink herself watched Davina's cover. Pink said the cover was "amazing" and even better than she could sing it. Davina Michelle's video quickly became very popular. She was invited to perform on TV shows like RTL Late Night and De Wereld Draait Door. She also performed in different places in the United States. As of October 2024, her "What About Us" cover video has over 24 million views. Her YouTube channel has more than 1 million subscribers. She even got to open for Pink during her Beautiful Trauma Tour in The Hague in 2019.
First Songs and Big Hits
In December 2017, Davina Michelle released her first single, "Ga." She worked with the Efteling, a famous theme park, on this song. It was the official song for the musical Sprookjessprokkelaar.
In 2018, Davina Michelle joined the TV show Beste Zangers. In one episode, she sang a cover of "Duurt te lang" by rapper Glen Faria. Just two days after the show aired, her version of the song became the most downloaded song on iTunes in the Netherlands. Later in 2018, it reached number one on the Dutch Top 40, the Mega Top 50, and the Dutch Single Top 100 charts. In November 2018, the song was certified gold, meaning it sold a lot of copies.
Special Performances and Events
In March 2020, Davina Michelle performed four "empty concerts" at the Rotterdam Ahoy arena. This happened at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. She sang "17 miljoen mensen" with Snelle. This was a new version of an older Dutch song. It was released as a single and stayed at number one on the Dutch Top 40 for four weeks. At only 1 minute and 47 seconds long, it became the shortest number-one hit in Dutch history.
On May 18, 2021, Davina Michelle performed her song "Sweet Water" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. The contest was held in her birth city, Rotterdam. She was part of a special performance called "The Power of Water."
On September 5, 2021, Davina Michelle sang the Dutch national anthem. This was before the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. It was the first Formula 1 race in the Netherlands since 1985. She sang it again for the awards ceremony after Dutch driver Max Verstappen won the race. Her song "Beat Me" was supposed to be the theme for the 2020 Grand Prix, but that race was canceled.
