Discovering the Story of Owain
The main character is Owain. He is a descendant of both Roman and British soldiers. Owain is the only survivor of a big battle near Bath.
After the battle, Owain finds a loyal dog. Together, they travel towards the border of Wales. They reach the ruins of an old Roman city called Viroconium (Wroxeter).
Owain's Journey and New Friends
In the deserted city, Owain meets Regina. She is a young street kid, and the only person left there. Owain and Regina learn to trust each other. They form a strong friendship.
Later, they leave the city. But they get separated on their journey. Owain ends up becoming a thrall. This means he becomes a servant or slave to a Saxon lord.
He lives in the swampy lands near the Isle of Wight for many years. During this time, Owain experiences life among the Saxons.
A Changing World in Ancient Britain
The story happens during an important time in Britain. The Saxons were invaders from Europe. The Celts were the native people. They were slowly starting to get along.
As Owain lives with the Saxons, he sees these changes. He learns that the Saxons and Celts can find common ground. They begin to work together.
The book's title, Dawn Wind, has a special meaning. It refers to the arrival of St Augustine. He brought Christianity to the Saxons. This new religion helped bring the Saxons and the already Christian Celts closer.
