How DeSoto Falls Got Its Name

The DeSoto Falls are named after a famous Spanish explorer. His name was Hernando deSoto. He traveled through Georgia around the year 1540.

There is a sign on the DeSoto Falls Trail that tells a cool story. This hiking trail is about 2.4-mile (3.9 km) long. It goes to and from the falls. The sign says that a piece of armor was found at the bottom of the falls. This happened in the 1880s.

Exploring the DeSoto Falls Area

The falls are part of the huge Chattahoochee National Forest. The area around the falls is special. It is called the Desoto Falls Scenic Area. This scenic area covers about 650-acre (2.6 km2) of land.

You can also find a campground right next to Frogtown Creek. DeSoto Falls is one of four popular waterfalls in this forest. They are all located near the town of Helen, Georgia. The other three popular waterfalls are Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, and Raven Cliff Falls. These other falls are in nearby White County.
