Deadwood is a small, quiet place in Lane County, Oregon, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. You can find Deadwood along Oregon Route 36, nestled within the beautiful Oregon Coast Range.

Why is it Called Deadwood?

Deadwood got its name from Deadwood Creek. This creek flows into Lake Creek, which is part of the Siuslaw River system.

The creek was named "Deadwood" because of all the dead trees, called "snags," that stood along its banks. These snags were left behind after several wildfires swept through the area.

A Look at Deadwood's History

The Deadwood post office first opened its doors in 1884. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail.

In 1914, the post office was closed and moved to a nearby community called Greenleaf. But don't worry, it came back! The Deadwood post office was reestablished in 1950.

Special Communities and Artists

Deadwood is home to Alpha Farm, which is a special kind of living arrangement called an "intentional community." This community was started in 1971.

For a while, Alpha Farm owned a café and store called the Alpha Bit in Mapleton. They sold it in 2018. Other interesting people have lived in Deadwood too, like artists Ernie and Mary Lou Goertzen, who made their home in the old Deadwood schoolhouse starting in 1975.
