Tatsuo Fujioka (born August 19, 1980), known as Dean Fujioka, is a Japanese actor, singer, musician, model, and film director. He is also known by his Chinese name, Ténggāng Diàn.

About Dean Fujioka

Dean Fujioka was born in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. He grew up in Kamagaya, Chiba Prefecture. Dean speaks many languages, including Japanese, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Indonesian. Even though he started his career in a Chinese fashion show, his family is all Japanese. He wanted to see the world, so after high school, he studied IT in Seattle, USA. After college, he traveled around Asia, learning about different cultures and languages.

Dean has many hobbies! He enjoys Chinese martial arts, kickboxing, chess, basketball, skiing, and photography. He also loves writing music and lyrics. Even though he has a gluten allergy, he loves food and is very careful about what he eats.

Music and Instruments

Dean has loved music since he was a child. He started making music in Indonesia and now mostly works in Tokyo. He writes, composes, and produces his own songs, and he also raps. He can play many instruments, like the guitar, drums, and piano. Dean often shows off his beatboxing skills on TV. He enjoys music by artists like Yutaka Ozaki and Seiko Matsuda. The first CD he ever bought was "Kessen wa Kinyōbi" by the band Dreams Come True.

Dean's Family Life

Dean Fujioka married Vanina Amalia Hidayat, who is Chinese Indonesian, in 2012. They welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, in 2014. In March 2017, Dean shared a picture of his third child, another son, on Instagram.

Dean's Career Journey

Dean Fujioka began his career as a model in Hong Kong in 2004. He worked for many fashion brands and appeared in top magazines. At the same time, he was in TV and print commercials across Asia.

Starting as an Actor Overseas

In 2006, Dean started acting. He moved to Taipei and appeared in his first TV series, Goku Dō High School. His first movie, August Story, was noticed at film festivals in Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan.

In 2007, he played a talented pianist in the TV series Corner with Love. He also appeared in his first Taiwanese film, Summer's Tail. A year later, he was in the TV series Miss No Good. After this, he took a break from acting and went to Jakarta, where he worked on music with DJ Sumo.

In 2011, Dean was in the film Seediq Bale, which was about Taiwan's history. He also joined the talent agency Amuse, Inc. that year. In 2012, he appeared in the film Black & White Episode I: The Dawn of Assault.

In 2013, Dean was in the TV series Just You in Taiwan. He also directed his first film, I am Ichihashi: Journal of a Murderer, in Japan. In 2014, he played a Chinese historical figure in the Japanese TV movie Shooting Down – Three Pilots. He also appeared as a Japanese character in the TV series The Pinkertons in North America.

Becoming Famous in Japan

In 2015, Dean starred as a private detective in his first Japanese TV series, Detective versus Detectives. He also became very popular for his role in the Japanese morning drama Here Comes Asa!.

In 2016, he appeared in several TV series like Please Love the Useless Me and IQ246: The Cases of a Royal Genius. He also starred in the web series Happy Marriage!?. Dean also restarted his music career and released his first album, Cycle. He gained global fame when his song "History Maker" became the opening theme for the anime Yuri!!! on Ice. Because of the anime's popularity, his name became known worldwide. In 2016, he was ranked 5th globally in the "Musicians" category for Google searches!

In 2017, Dean started appearing on the news program Saturday Station. His song "Unchained Melody" was used as its ending theme. He starred in the film Marriage and released his first EP, "Permanent Vacation," as its theme song. He also starred in the TV series May I blackmail you? and released his second EP, "Let it snow!". Dean also appeared in the live-action movie Fullmetal Alchemist, playing the popular character Colonel Roy Mustang.

In 2018, Dean had his first Japan tour, History In The Making 2018, attracting 20,000 fans. He starred in the TV series The Count of Monte-Cristo: Great Revenge, winning an award for Best Leading Actor. He released the song "Echo" as its theme. The music video for "Echo" won the Best Alternative Video at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan. He also appeared in the films Kids on the Slope, Recall, and The Man from the Sea.

In 2019, Dean starred in the TV movie Les Misérables: Owarinaki Tabiji. He released his second album, History In The Making, and made his debut as a DJ. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 42nd Japan Academy Prize for his role in Recall. He held his first Asia tour, Born To Make History, visiting Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Indonesia. He appeared in the film Hit Me Anyone One More Time and starred in the TV series Sherlock: Untold Stories, singing its theme songs "Shelly" and "Searching For The Ghost". He also collaborated with a sweets cafe, creating "Dean Tapioca" drinks. He received the Ambassador of Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange award. His song "Send It Away (feat. GONG)" made him the first Japanese artist to be ranked on the Chinese Billboard charts.

Recent Career Highlights

In February 2020, Dean became an ambassador for "World Robot Summit 2020." He released the song "Neo Dimension" on his birthday in August, which was an updated version of a song he wrote in 2008. In September, he released "东京游 (Tokyo Trip)," a collaboration with rapper FOX. In October, he released "Go The Distance," which had both Japanese and Chinese versions. The Chinese version became a theme song for the mobile game Hidden World Records, and he even became an anime character in its music video! He also appeared in the TV series Dangerous Venus. In December, he held his first online concert, Plan B, which was streamed worldwide.

In February 2021, Dean appeared in the TV series Reach Beyond the Blue Sky, playing the same role of Godai Tomoatsu he played in Here Comes Asa!. In March, he released his single "Take Over." In April, he published his picture book FamBam and started a project to donate picture books to children in Japan and Asia, working with Save the Children. In June, he released his first photo book Z-Ero. He appeared in the TV series My Fair Prince and held his live tour Musical Transmute. In November, he became the first Japanese ambassador for the men's category of the fashion brand COACH. In December, he voiced a character in the animated film Hula Fulla Dance and released his third album Transmute.

In January 2022, Dean starred in, created, and produced the film Pure Japanese. He appeared in the TV movie Tsuda Umeko: Osatsu ni Natta Ryūgakusei. From April, he starred in the TV series Pandora's Fruit Season 1 and Season 2, also singing its theme song "Apple." He appeared in the sequels to the Fullmetal Alchemist film and The Hound of the Baskervilles: Sherlock the Movie. In July, he released his single "Apple," which included "Be Alive," the theme song for Identity V Japan League. He starred in the TV series HOTEL -NEXT DOOR- and helped create a special yokan (Japanese sweet) called "Dean Fuji Yokan," with coffee from Indonesia. Part of the money from the coffee helps protect orangutans and support local farmers.

From January 2023, Dean appeared in the TV series Hoshi Furu Yoru ni. In April, he played Tengu / Sakamoto Ryōma in the morning drama Ranman. In June, he was a guest artist at Fantasy on Ice, an ice show, performing with famous figure skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu. In July, he released his first best-of album, Stars of the Lid. He also worked with the Taiwanese band Accusefive on the song "Hare no Hi / Qíng Tīan." He surprised fans by appearing at their concert in Taiwan to sing the song. In September, he held a live concert at Nippon Budokan. He also appeared in the TV series Ya Boy Kongming!, playing Liu Bei and narrating in Chinese.

In January 2024, Dean appeared in the TV movie Shōjiki Fudōsan Special and the TV series Shōjiki Fudōsan 2. In February, he was a guest on the song "TOY BOY feat. DEAN FUJIOKA" by the hip hop group HONEST BOYZ®. In April, he was a guest voice actor for the Japanese dub of Thomas & Friends: The Mystery of Lookout Mountain. In June, he starred in Pandora's Fruit The Latest Chapter Special and Season 3. He also appeared in the Taiwanese TV series The Victims' Game Season 2 on Netflix, playing a prosecutor in Chinese. In August, he held his first Billboard live tour and appeared in the film Last Mile. In September, he performed at his first outdoor music festival, Kaze to Rock Imonikai 2024, and became a goodwill ambassador for WWF Japan. In October, his film Orang Ikan, which he produced and starred in, was shown at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival. In February 2025, Dean starred in Shōjiki Fudōsan Minerva Special, a spin-off of a TV series he was in. He also appeared at an event for Ya Boy Kongming! The Movie, singing in his character's costume. In March, he became the first Japanese AFA ambassador at the 18th Asian Film Awards. In April, he appeared in the TV series Taigan no Kaji~ Kore ga, Watashi no Ikiru Michi!~ and the films Meet me at Angie's BAR and Oishikute Naku Toki. He also played Liu Bei and narrated in Ya Boy Kongming! The Movie. In May, he appeared in the film Our Eternal Song.
