Tatsuo Fujioka (born August 19, 1980), known as Dean Fujioka, is a Japanese actor, singer, musician, model, and film director. He is also a songwriter and producer. He is known for his roles in TV shows like Asa ga Kita and Sherlock: Untold Stories, and films like Fullmetal Alchemist (film).

Biography

Dean Fujioka was born in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. He grew up in Kamagaya, Chiba Prefecture. Dean is very good with languages. He speaks Japanese, English, Cantonese, Standard Mandarin, and Indonesian.

After high school, Dean studied IT in Seattle, USA. Then, he traveled around Asia. He learned about many different cultures and languages.

Dean has many hobbies. He enjoys Chinese martial arts, kickboxing, chess, basketball, skiing, and photography. He also loves writing music and lyrics. He is careful about what he eats because he is allergic to gluten.

Music has been a big part of Dean's life since he was a child. He started making music in Indonesia and now mainly works in Tokyo. He writes, composes, and produces his own songs. He can play many instruments, including guitar, drums, and piano. He also often shows off his beatboxing skills on TV.

In 2012, Dean married Vanina Amalia Hidayat from Indonesia. They had twins in 2014. In 2017, they welcomed their third baby.

Starting in Asia

Dean Fujioka began his career as a model in Hong Kong in 2004. He worked for many fashion brands and appeared in top magazines. At the same time, he was in TV and print commercials across Asia.

In 2006, Dean started acting. He moved to Taipei, Taiwan. His first TV show was Goku Dō High School. His first movie, August Story, got attention at film festivals.

He continued acting in Taiwan. In 2007, he played a talented pianist in Corner with Love. He also appeared in the film Summer's Tail. In 2008, he was in Miss No Good. After this, he took a break from acting to focus on music in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In 2011, Dean joined the company Amuse, Inc.. He appeared in the film Seediq Bale, which is about Taiwan's history. In 2013, he starred in his first self-directed film in Japan, I am Ichihashi: Journal of a Murderer.

Becoming Famous in Japan

In 2015, Dean got his big break in Japan. He starred in the TV show Detective versus Detectives. He also became very popular for his role in the morning drama Here Comes Asa!.

In 2016, he appeared in several TV shows like Please Love the Useless Me. He also restarted his music career and released his first album, Cycle. That same year, his song "History Maker" became the opening song for the popular anime Yuri!!! on Ice. This song helped him become known worldwide. In 2016, he was ranked 5th globally in the "Musicians" category for Google searches.

In 2017, Dean released his first EP, "Permanent Vacation". He also starred in the film Marriage and the TV show May I blackmail you?. He played Colonel Roy Mustang in the live-action film Fullmetal Alchemist, a very popular character.

Later that year, he starred in the TV series Sherlock: Untold Stories and sang its theme songs. He also became an ambassador for Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange.

In 2020, Dean became an ambassador for "World Robot Summit 2020". He released new songs like "Neo Dimension" and "Go The Distance". He also held his first online concert, "Plan B", which was streamed worldwide.

In 2021, Dean appeared in the TV series Reach Beyond the Blue Sky, playing the same role he had in Asa ga Kita. He released a single "Take Over" and published his first picture book called FamBam. He also started a project to donate picture books to children in Japan and Asia. He released his first photo book Z-Ero and his third album Transmute. He became the first Japanese ambassador for the men's fashion brand COACH.

In 2022, Dean starred in and produced the film Pure Japanese. He continued his role in the Fullmetal Alchemist film sequels and the Sherlock movie. He also started a project to protect orangutan habitats in Indonesia by selling a special kind of traditional Japanese sweet called yokan.

In 2023, Dean appeared in the TV series Hoshi Furu Yoru ni and Ranman. He performed at the ice show Fantasy on Ice with famous skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu. He released his first greatest hits album, Stars of the Lid. He also collaborated with the Taiwanese band Accusefive and made a surprise appearance at their concert in Taiwan.
