Fullmetal Alchemist (in Japanese: 鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no Renkinjutsu-shi) is a very popular manga and anime series from Japan. It was created by Hiromu Arakawa. The story first appeared in a magazine called Monthly Shonen Gangan.

The manga was so popular that it inspired two different anime TV shows. The first anime came out in 2003 and told its own unique story. The second anime, called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, was released in 2009. This version followed the original manga story much more closely. There are also movies based on the anime series.

The Story of Fullmetal Alchemist

The story takes place in a world where alchemy is a very important type of science. Alchemy is like a special kind of magic or science that lets people change one thing into another. However, there's a strict rule called "Equivalent Exchange." This means you can only create something if you give up something of equal value. You can't make something from nothing!

The Elric Brothers' Journey

The main characters are two brothers, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. When they were young, they tried to use alchemy to bring their mother back to life. This was a forbidden act, and it went terribly wrong. Alphonse lost his entire body, and Edward lost an arm and a leg.

To save his brother, Edward quickly used alchemy to attach Alphonse's soul to a large suit of armor. Their friend, Winry Rockbell, then made special metal prosthetic limbs for Edward. These new limbs helped him move around.

As the series goes on, the brothers travel to find the Philosopher's Stone. This legendary item is said to be able to break the rule of Equivalent Exchange. They hope it can help them get their original bodies back. Their journey is full of adventure, mystery, and challenges.

Main Characters

The series focuses on the strong bond and adventures of the two Elric brothers. They face many dangers together as they search for a way to fix their past mistakes.

Edward Elric

Edward is the older brother and the main hero of the story. He is known for being very brave and proud. Edward is also a brilliant alchemist, one of the best in their world. He is often called the "Fullmetal Alchemist" because of his metal arm and leg.

Edward is shorter than most teenagers his age. He really dislikes it when anyone mentions his height! He often gets frustrated or even uses his metal fist if someone teases him about it. His biggest goal is to keep the promise he made to Alphonse: to get his brother's body back.

Alphonse Elric

Alphonse is Edward's younger brother. After their failed alchemy attempt, his soul is connected to a huge, empty suit of armor. This means he doesn't have a physical body of his own. He can't eat, sleep, or feel things like a normal person.

Alphonse is usually calmer and more thoughtful than Edward. He often helps Edward think things through. Even though he's stuck in armor, he's still very strong and skilled in fighting. His main hope is to get his body back, and he trusts Edward completely to help him achieve this.
