The Story Behind the Name

The name "Deception Bay" has an interesting history. It was named by a famous explorer.

Who Named It?

In 1823, a man named John Oxley explored this area. He was an important surveyor and explorer. He was one of the first Europeans to explore parts of Queensland.

Why "Deception"?

When John Oxley first saw the bay, he thought it was a river. He called it "Pumice Stone River." This was because the water was very shallow. It looked like a river flowing into the sea. However, he soon realized it was not a river at all. It was actually a bay. Because he was "deceived" by its appearance, the name "Deception Bay" was later given to it. This name reminds us of his early mistake.
