What's in Defiance?
Defiance is located near the Missouri River. The famous Katy Trail State Park runs right through the community. This trail is popular for biking and walking.
This area was once the home of a famous frontiersman named Daniel Boone. He moved to the Femme Osage Valley in 1799. He received land from the Spanish government. The community was not named Defiance when Boone lived there.
Several historic buildings in Defiance are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important places that are kept safe for future generations. These include the Daniel Boone Home, the Daniel Boone Hays House, and the Isaac McCormick House.
How Defiance Got Its Name
The name "Defiance" has a cool story. The community was named in the late 1800s. This happened when the Katy Railroad arrived. At first, people wanted to name the town Parsons. This was after the person who owned the land.
However, there was already a town called Parsons, Kansas on the same railroad line. So, the settlers had to pick a different name. They thought about names like Missouriton and Bluff City. Finally, they chose Defiance. This was because the community "defied" (or stood up against) a nearby rival town called Matson, Missouri. Defiance wanted to make sure it got a train station on the new railroad line.
The Missouri Wine Country
Defiance is part of a special area known as the "Missouri Rhineland." This region is famous for its many wineries. State Highway 94, which runs through Defiance, is sometimes called the "Missouri Weinstrasse." "Weinstrasse" means "wine road" in German.
The wine industry here was started by German immigrants. Later, Italian immigrants also helped it grow. Vineyards, where grapes are grown, are found on both sides of the Missouri River.
