Acting Career Highlights
Starting in Television
When Deidre was a teenager, she visited Los Angeles. She got some modeling jobs and appeared in commercials. At first, she thought acting was just a temporary job. She planned to become a psychologist. Later, she realized that acting was her true career.
In 1976, Deidre Hall played the superheroine Electra Woman. This was in Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, a children's show. It aired on Saturday mornings.
Joining Days of Our Lives
Hall appeared on several TV shows before joining Days of Our Lives in 1976. She took on the role of Dr. Marlena Evans. She wasn't sure she would get the part. However, she was cast, and the role made her very famous. Fans even protested when it was hinted that her character might be written off the show. Two TV magazines named her the best soap actress in 1983.
Working on Our House
In 1986, Hall started playing Jesse Witherspoon in the family drama Our House. This show was on NBC for two seasons. Wilford Brimley played her father-in-law, and Chad Allen played her son. Shannen Doherty played her older daughter.
Deidre Hall initially worked on both Our House and Days of Our Lives. She filmed Our House during the week and Days of Our Lives on Saturdays. But it became too difficult to manage both schedules. So, she left Days of Our Lives in 1987. Our House was canceled in 1988.
Returning to Days of Our Lives
Hall made guest appearances on other shows until March 1991. Then, she returned to Days of Our Lives. The producer, Ken Corday, asked her to come back. He hoped her return would help the show's ratings. Deidre insisted on playing Marlena again, not a new character. She signed a contract for six months. However, she stayed with the show for 18 more years.
On January 24, 2009, she left the show due to budget cuts. Her salary was higher than most other actors on daytime shows. On May 11, 2023, Hall's 5,000th episode aired on Peacock. This episode showed a flashback of her first time meeting Mickey Horton.
Other Projects and Recognition
In 1995, Hall produced and starred in Never Say Never: The Deidre Hall Story. This TV movie was about her personal journey to become a mother. Her longtime co-star, Suzanne Rogers, also appeared in the film.
