A Look Back: History of Del Monte Forest

The Del Monte Forest was once part of a big resort called the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey. This fancy hotel was built by Charles Crocker. He was one of the "Big Four" railroad leaders in California. His company, the Pacific Improvement Company (PIC), owned the land. The hotel first opened its doors on June 10, 1880.

Later, in 1919, a person named Samuel Finley Brown Morse started the Del Monte Properties Company. This new company bought all the land from PIC. This included the Del Monte Forest, the Del Monte Lodge (now called the Lodge at Pebble Beach), and the Hotel Del Monte. After World War II, the United States Navy bought the actual hotel building. It became the new home for the Naval Postgraduate School.
