History of Delaware, Oklahoma
In 1889, a railroad called the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railroad built tracks through this area. They put in a special switch where the town is now. They called this spot Comana Switch. Soon, a small community started to grow around it. People began calling it Delaware. This name became official when a post office opened there on March 19, 1898.
In 1904, oil was found nearby. This made Delaware a "boom town" for a short time. Its population quickly grew to about four thousand people. But this growth did not last. By November 1907, the population had fallen sharply to just 108 people. Since then, the number of people living in Delaware has changed a lot. The highest official population was 804 people in 1920.
