Where is Dellach Located?
Dellach is found in a beautiful valley called the upper Gail valley. This valley is nestled between two other towns: Kötschach-Mauthen to the west and Kirchbach to the east.
To the south of Dellach, you'll find the Carnic Alps. These mountains form the border between Austria and Italy. To the north, a tall mountain called Reißkofel stands proudly. It's the highest peak in the Gailtal Alps on that side, reaching about 2,371 meters (7,779 feet) high!
A Glimpse into Dellach's Past
Ancient Settlements and Roman Times
Long, long ago, people lived in the Dellach area. In a small village called Gurina, archaeologists have found signs of a very old settlement. This settlement dates back to the Hallstatt culture, which was a time before the Romans.
During this period, the local Celtic people were very busy. They had special workshops where they melted copper. They even made their own coins! Later, this area became one of the first Roman cities in what is now Austria. It was part of a Roman province called Noricum.
The Village's First Mention
The village of Dellach itself was first written about in a document from the year 1370. Its name, Doelach, might come from a Slavic word, dolina, which means "valley."
There was a church in a nearby place called Sankt Daniel. This church has been around since the time of the Carolingian Empire, which was a very old empire in Europe. For many years, powerful families like the Counts of Gorizia owned the land here. Eventually, it became part of the lands controlled by the House of Habsburg, a very important Austrian family.
Modern Dellach
The Dellach we know today, as a proper town or municipality, was officially created in 1850.
