About the Station Building
The Delray Beach train station was built in 1927. It was designed by Gustav Maass. He was an architect from the firm Harvey & Clarke in West Palm Beach.
Design and Features
The station looks very similar to the Homestead Seaboard Air Line Railway Station further south. The main difference is that the Delray Beach station uses plain stucco. The Homestead station has fancy Corinthian arches.
The northern part of the station used to be a freight room. This part has been changed and made bigger since it was first built. The station also looked just like the old Seaboard depot in Boynton Beach. Sadly, the Boynton Beach station was taken down in 2006.
Train Services Over Time
This station has seen different train services over the years.
Early Passenger Service
Amtrak is a national passenger rail company. They continued to offer passenger service at this station. This started in 1971. Amtrak took over the Silver Meteor and Silver Star routes from the Seaboard Air Line Railway.
Tri-Rail and Station Changes
Tri-Rail is a commuter train service. It started serving the station in 1989. However, Tri-Rail moved to a new Delray Beach station in 1991. This new station was only a few blocks south. They moved because of disagreements with the station's owner and difficult access.
Passenger service at the original station completely stopped in 1995. This happened when Amtrak also started using the newer Tri-Rail station for its Delray Beach stop.
