A Soldier's Story
From Ireland to America
Denis Byrne was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1833. When he was older, he moved across the ocean to the United States. He settled in New York City, a very big and busy place. After some time, he decided to join the U.S. Army. The army sent him to the American frontier, which was the edge of settled lands, to serve with the 5th U.S. Infantry.
Fighting in the American West
By the time General Nelson A. Miles began his "winter campaign," Denis Byrne was an experienced soldier. He had already fought in many battles and had become a sergeant. This campaign was against the Sioux Indians in the Montana Territory. Between October 1876 and January 1877, Sergeant Byrne took part in many fights against the Sioux. One of the most important battles he was in was against Chief Sitting Bull at a place called Cedar Creek.
Earning the Medal of Honor
For his bravery and courage during these battles, Denis Byrne received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest military award given for bravery in the United States. He and 31 other soldiers were honored for their "gallantry in engagements" with the Sioux. This means they showed great courage and skill in battles at Cedar Creek and other places. Denis Byrne lived to be 72 years old. He passed away in Bird Island, Minnesota, on December 31, 1905.
