The city of Cajamarca is high up in the Andes Mountain Range. It sits about 2,700 meters (or 8,858 feet) above sea level. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world! A part of the Cajamarca Region even touches the Amazon Rainforest, which is the biggest rainforest on Earth.

History of Cajamarca
Ancient Times and Early Cultures
The Cajamarca Region has a very long history. Some of the oldest known irrigation canals in the Americas are found here. These canals helped ancient people water their crops. They are located in the Nanchoc District. Scientists believe these canals might be as old as 4700 BCE.
From the 6th to the 10th century, a group called the Wari culture lived in the highlands of Cajamarca. They were powerful and built an important center called Wiraquchapampa.
The Inca Empire Arrives
In the 15th century, the mighty Incas took over this land. They made Cajamarca an important part of their growing empire. Around 1465, the Incas set up a new area here. It helped them connect to other lands they wanted to conquer.
Spanish Arrival and Conquest
Cajamarca was already one of the oldest cities in South America when the Spanish arrived. This happened during their conquest of Peru. The Spanish took control of the region, changing its history forever.
