Deputy Premier of Quebec facts for kids
The Deputy Premier of Quebec (in French, Vice-premier ministre du Québec for a man or Vice-première ministre du Québec for a woman) is like the second-in-command of the government in Quebec. This person helps the Premier of Quebec lead the province.
The role of Deputy Premier didn't exist until July 1960. In the 1960s, people sometimes called this job the "vice president of the Executive Council." This council is a group of important government leaders.
Sometimes, the position has been empty for a short time. This happened when Premier Daniel Johnson, Sr. passed away, and the Deputy Premier, Jean-Jacques Bertrand, became the new Premier. It also happened after Deputy Premier Pierre Laporte died during a difficult time in Quebec's history.
Two other Deputy Premiers, Bernard Landry and Pauline Marois, later became Premier. However, they became Premier some years after they had finished their time as Deputy Premier.
The person who served the longest as Deputy Premier was Lise Bacon. She held the job for 8 years and 30 days. The shortest time was by Michelle Courchesne, who served for 4 months and 5 days. Out of 22 Deputy Premiers, 10 have been women. The current Deputy Premier is Geneviève Guilbault from the Coalition Avenir Québec party. She started her role on October 18, 2018.
