Derek Jerome Hill (born December 30, 1995) is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder for the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB). Before joining the Marlins, he played for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, and San Francisco Giants. The Tigers picked him in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft.

Early Life and High School Baseball
Derek Hill grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, with his mother. During summers, he visited his father in Northern California. There, he played baseball on special "select" teams.
In 2011, he moved to Sacramento. He attended Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. In his final year, he was a fantastic hitter. He hit for a .500 average. He also had 11 doubles, seven triples, 30 runs batted in (RBI), and 29 stolen bases.
Professional Baseball Career
Starting with the Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers chose Derek Hill in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. He was the 23rd player picked overall. On June 11, the Tigers signed him to a deal. He had planned to play college baseball at the University of Oregon.
Hill started his professional journey in 2014. He played for the GCL Tigers and the Connecticut Tigers. His first season was a bit tough. He hit .208 with two home runs.
In 2015, he played for the West Michigan Whitecaps. He hit .238 and stole 25 bases. An injury limited him to only 53 games that year. He returned to West Michigan in 2016. He improved, hitting .266 with 35 stolen bases.
In 2017, Hill began with West Michigan again. He played very well, hitting .285. He then moved up to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He played only nine games there, hitting .194.
Reaching Major League Baseball
After the 2019 season, Derek Hill was added to the Tigers' main roster. On September 2, 2020, he was called up to the Tigers. This happened after another player, JaCoby Jones, got injured.
Hill made his MLB debut on September 4, 2020. He came into the game as a defensive replacement. He played 15 games for the Tigers in 2020.
He started the 2021 season at the Tigers' training site. In May, he joined the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. On June 3, he was called back to the major league team. This was due to an injury to Victor Reyes.
On August 8, Hill hit his very first major league home run. It was a three-run hit against the Cleveland Indians. A few days later, on August 11, he got injured. He hurt his ribcage in a collision with a teammate. In 49 games for the 2021 Tigers, Hill hit .259. He also had 3 home runs and 6 stolen bases. He was one of the fastest players in MLB.
In 2022, Hill started the season on the injured list. He had a hamstring strain. On August 1, 2022, the Tigers decided to let him go.
Moving to Other Teams
On August 5, 2022, the Seattle Mariners picked up Derek Hill. He was sent to their Triple-A team, the Tacoma Rainiers. He later became a free agent in November.
On November 14, 2022, Hill signed a minor league deal. He joined the Washington Nationals organization. He played for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. He had a great start, hitting .324 with 8 home runs. On June 21, 2023, he was called up to the Nationals' major league team. He played 13 games for them. On July 5, the Nationals let him go. He then became a free agent again in October.
On December 27, 2023, Hill signed with the Texas Rangers. He played for their Triple-A team, the Round Rock Express. He hit very well, with 8 home runs in 34 games. On May 21, 2024, the Rangers brought him up to their main team. He played 16 games for Texas, hitting three home runs. The Rangers let him go a second time on July 20.
On July 23, 2024, the San Francisco Giants claimed Hill. He played 5 games for the Giants. On August 2, the Giants also let him go.
Finally, on August 3, 2024, the Miami Marlins claimed Derek Hill. He joined their team.

Derek Hill's father, Orsino Hill, works in baseball too. He is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
