Derek Jerome Hill (born December 30, 1995) is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder for the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB). Derek has also played for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, and San Francisco Giants. The Tigers picked him in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft.

Early Life and High School Baseball
Derek Hill grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, with his mom. He spent his summers in Northern California with his dad. There, he played baseball on special teams.
In 2011, he moved to Sacramento, California. He went to Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. During his senior year, he was a great hitter. He hit for a .500 average. He also had 11 doubles, seven triples, 30 runs batted in (RBI), and 29 stolen bases.
Derek Hill's Professional Baseball Journey
Starting with the Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers chose Derek Hill in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. He was the 23rd player picked overall. On June 11, the Tigers signed him to a deal. He received a $2 million signing bonus. Before this, he planned to play college baseball at the University of Oregon.
Derek started his professional career in 2014. He played for the GCL Tigers and the Connecticut Tigers. He hit .208 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 47 games. In 2015, he played for the West Michigan Whitecaps. He hit .238 with 25 stolen bases. Injuries limited him to only 53 games that year.
He returned to West Michigan in 2016 and played better. He had a .266 batting average. He also hit one home run, had 31 RBIs, and stole 35 bases. In 2017, he started with West Michigan again. He hit .285 and was promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He played only nine games there, hitting .194.
Making it to Major League Baseball
After the 2019 season, Derek was added to the Tigers' main roster. On September 2, 2020, the Tigers called him up to the major league team. This happened after an injury to another player. He made his MLB debut on September 4, 2020. He came in as a defensive replacement. He played 15 games for the Tigers in 2020. He hit .091 with no home runs or RBIs.
Derek started the 2021 season at the Tigers' training site. He then joined the Triple–A Toledo Mud Hens in May. On June 3, he was called back to the major league team. This was due to an injury to Victor Reyes. On August 8, Derek hit his first major league home run. It was a three-run hit against the Cleveland Indians.
On August 11, Derek went on the injured list. He hurt his ribcage in a collision with a teammate. In 49 games with the 2021 Tigers, he hit .259. He also had 3 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 6 stolen bases. He was one of the fastest players in MLB that year.
On April 6, 2022, Derek started the 2022 season on the injured list. He had a hamstring strain. On August 1, 2022, the Tigers removed him from their roster.
Moving to Other Teams
On August 5, 2022, the Seattle Mariners picked up Derek. He was sent to the Triple–A Tacoma Rainiers. He later became a free agent on November 10.
On November 14, 2022, Derek signed a deal with the Washington Nationals. He played for the Triple–A Rochester Red Wings. In 48 games, he hit .324 with 8 home runs and 31 RBIs. On June 21, 2023, he joined the Nationals' major league team. He played 13 games, hitting .170. He was later sent back to Triple-A.
On December 27, 2023, Derek signed with the Texas Rangers. He played 34 games for the Triple–A Round Rock Express. He hit .333 with eight home runs and 16 RBIs. On May 21, 2024, the Rangers called him up to their main team. He played 16 games for Texas, hitting .256 with three home runs. He was later removed from the Rangers' roster again.
On July 23, 2024, the San Francisco Giants picked up Derek. He played 5 games for the Giants, getting 3 hits in 12 tries. He was removed from their roster on August 2.
On August 3, 2024, the Miami Marlins picked up Derek Hill. He is currently playing for them.
