About Derek Joslin

His Early Life

Derek Joslin was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. He started playing hockey when he was just four years old. His first team was the Oak Ridges Kings. His dad, Jeff, was his coach and also played defence in junior hockey. When Derek was young, he played in the 2001 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. This is a big event for young hockey players. His first job was working as a caddie at a golf club.

Playing Junior Hockey

Joslin was chosen by the Ottawa 67's in the 2003 OHL draft. He was only 16 when he played his first few games in the OHL. Most of that year, he played for the Aurora Jr. B Tigers.

In the 2004-05 season, he scored his first OHL goal for the 67's. He had 30 points that year, which was great for a young defenceman. His team, the 67's, made it to the OHL Finals. They lost to the London Knights but still got to play in the 2005 Memorial Cup. Joslin played less in these big games because of a broken bone in his wrist. After this season, the San Jose Sharks drafted him into the NHL.

During the 2005-06 season, Joslin got even better. He scored 11 goals and had 48 points. He was chosen to play in the Subway Super Series, representing the OHL against Russian players. The OHL team won that game 5-1. After his junior season ended, he played two games for the Cleveland Barons in the AHL. This was his first taste of professional hockey.

In the 2006-07 season, Joslin signed his first NHL contract with the San Jose Sharks. He was also named an OHL All-Star. He finished the season with 49 points. After the 67's were out of the playoffs, he played a few more games for the Worcester Sharks in the AHL.

Joslin joined the Worcester Sharks full-time for the 2007-08 season. He scored his first professional goal against the Manchester Monarchs. He played 80 games that year, scoring 10 goals and 34 points.

In the 2008-09 season, Joslin started with Worcester again. But soon, he got called up to the National Hockey League (NHL) to play for the San Jose Sharks. This was his NHL debut! He also played in the AHL All-Star Game that year. He even won the Hardest Shot Contest, shooting the puck at 98.6 miles per hour! He played 12 NHL games and 63 AHL games that season.

For the 2009-10 season, Joslin continued to play for both the Sharks (NHL) and Worcester (AHL). He got his first NHL point, an assist, against the Chicago Blackhawks. In the AHL playoffs, he scored 4 goals in 11 games, which was a lot for a defenceman.

In the 2010-11 season, Joslin stayed in the NHL all year. He scored his first NHL goal on December 13, 2010, against the Dallas Stars. Later that season, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. With the Hurricanes, he got more playing time and scored 5 points in 17 games.

After that season, Joslin signed a new two-year contract with the Hurricanes. In the 2011-12 season, he sometimes played as a forward (left wing) to get more ice time. He played a career-high 44 NHL games that year.

In 2012, the Hurricanes decided to release him from his contract. Joslin then signed with the Vancouver Canucks. Because of an NHL lockout, he started the season playing for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL. He later played for the Worcester Sharks again before being called up to the Canucks.

Playing in Europe

In 2013, Derek Joslin decided to play hockey in Europe. He signed a one-year contract with AIK IF in Sweden. After that, he moved to Germany. He played for the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers for two seasons.

Then, he joined the reigning champions, EHC München. He played for München for three years. During his time there, his team reached the finals every season and won two championships! This was a great achievement.

In 2019, Joslin moved to Austria and signed with EC Red Bull Salzburg. He continued his career there, playing for a few more seasons before retiring in 2023.

Career Highlights

Derek Joslin played 116 games in the NHL, scoring 4 goals and 12 assists for a total of 16 points. He also had a successful career in Europe, especially in Germany, where he won two championships with EHC München.
