Derek Joslin (born March 17, 1987) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played as a defence player. He recently played for EC VSV in the ICE Hockey League (ICEHL).

Derek played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for teams like the San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Vancouver Canucks. The Sharks picked him in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Before turning pro, he played major junior hockey for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was an All-Star in both the OHL and the American Hockey League (AHL).

Early Life and Hockey Beginnings

Derek Joslin was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. He started playing hockey when he was just four years old. His first team was the Oak Ridges Kings.

His dad, Jeff, was his coach and also played defence in junior hockey. When Derek was a kid, he played in the 2001 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. This is a famous tournament for young hockey players.

His Junior Hockey Days

Derek was chosen by the Ottawa 67's in the 2003 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft. He played a few games for the 67's when he was 16. Most of that year, he played for the Aurora Jr. B Tigers.

In the next season, Derek scored his first OHL goal for the 67's. He had 30 points that year, which was great for a defence player. His team made it to the OHL Finals but lost. However, they still got to play in the 2005 Memorial Cup. Derek was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

During the 2005–06 season, Derek scored 11 goals and had 48 points. He was one of the top defence players in the OHL. He also played for the OHL team in the Subway Super Series against Russian players. After his OHL season ended, he played two games in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Cleveland Barons.

In the 2006–07 season, Derek signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks. He was also named an OHL All-Star. He finished the season with 49 points. After his junior season, he played a few more games for the Worcester Sharks in the AHL.

Derek joined the Worcester Sharks full-time for the 2007–08 season. He scored his first professional goal that year. He played in 80 games, scoring 10 goals and getting 34 points.

In the next season, Derek started with Worcester. He made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut on January 3, 2009, for the San Jose Sharks. He played some games in the NHL and some in the AHL. He was also chosen for the AHL All-Star Game. He even won the Hardest Shot Contest at the All-Star Skills Competition!

For the 2009–10 season, Derek continued to play for both the Sharks and their AHL team. He got his first NHL point, an assist, against the Chicago Blackhawks. In the 2010–11 season, he scored his first NHL goal against the Dallas Stars. Later that season, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He played well for the Hurricanes, getting 5 points in 17 games.

Derek signed a new two-year contract with the Hurricanes. In the 2011–12 season, he played in 44 NHL games, which was his career high. Sometimes he even played as a left wing to help the team.

After his contract with Carolina ended, Derek signed with the Vancouver Canucks. Because of a lockout in the NHL, he started the season playing for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL. He later played for the Worcester Sharks again before being called up to the Canucks.

In 2013, Derek decided to play hockey in Europe. He signed a one-year contract with AIK IF in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). After Sweden, he moved to Germany. He played for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers for two seasons.

Then, he joined the EHC München team. He played there for three years and helped them reach the finals every season. They won two championships during his time there! In 2019, Derek moved to Austria to play for EC Red Bull Salzburg. He finished his career playing for EC VSV in the ICEHL, retiring in 2023.
