Dermot Walsh (born September 10, 1924 – died June 26, 2002) was a famous actor from Ireland. He was known for acting on stage, in movies, and on television. Many people remember him for playing King Richard the Lionheart in the TV series Richard the Lionheart in 1962.
Early Life
Dermot was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father was a journalist (someone who writes for newspapers or magazines), and his mother worked for the government. He went to St Mary's College in Rathmines. His parents wanted him to study Law at University College Dublin.
But Dermot was really interested in acting! He learned acting at the Abbey Theatre School. He also spent three years working with Lord Longford's theatre company at the Gate Theatre, where he even helped backstage.
Career
In 1945, Dermot moved to Britain. He was soon noticed by a talent scout from the Rank Organisation, a big British film company. This helped him get roles in movies like Bedelia, Hungry Hill, and The Mark of Cain. This was the start of Dermot's film career.
He starred as the main character in seven films before going back to theatre acting. Later, he returned to movies, often appearing in "B movies" (these were usually lower-budget films). He acted in over 40 films and more than 100 TV shows! His last movie appearance was in 1983.
Dermot also loved the stage. He first appeared on the London stage in 1949 in a play by George Bernard Shaw called Buoyant Billions. He was a very busy theatre actor. Some of his many theatre roles were in plays like Reluctant Heroes and The Mousetrap. He also tried writing and producing. He wrote a play called The Murder Line in 1967 and later produced other plays.
On television, Dermot appeared in shows like Danger Man and No Hiding Place. He also played the main role in all 39 episodes of the series Richard the Lionheart between 1962 and 1963.
Personal Life
Dermot Walsh was married three times. In 1949, he married actress Hazel Court. They had a daughter named Sally in 1950. They divorced in 1963.
His next marriage was to another actress, Diana Scougall, in 1968. They had a son named Michael in 1969. They divorced in 1974.
That same year, he married a third actress, Elizabeth Annear. They had two daughters: Elisabeth Dermot Walsh, who was born in 1974 and is also an actress today, and Olivia, born in 1977. Elizabeth Annear passed away in 1993.
