Desmond Michael Bane (born June 25, 1998) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the NBA, he played college basketball for the TCU Horned Frogs.

Desmond Bane was chosen in the first round of the 2020 NBA draft. The Boston Celtics picked him as the 30th overall player. However, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in November 2020. This happened before his first season even began. In his first year, Bane was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. On June 15, 2025, Bane was traded to the Orlando Magic.

Desmond Bane's Early Life

Desmond Bane moved around a lot with his mother and sister when he was very young. When he was two, he went to live with his great-grandparents. He grew up with them in Richmond, Indiana. At age 13, he found out his father lived in Nigeria.

Desmond played baseball until eighth grade. His great-grandfather was his coach when he was young. He also enjoyed playing football and soccer.

High School Basketball Career

Desmond Bane played basketball at Seton Catholic High School. This was a small private school in Richmond, Indiana. In his senior year, Bane was amazing. He averaged 30 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.2 blocks per game. These were the highest stats in the state.

He set a school record by scoring 62 points in one game. He also made nine three-pointers in that game. This was during a win against Lincoln Senior High School. He was also named the MVP of a holiday tournament.

Over his four years in high school, Bane scored 1,991 points. This was the most points ever in Wayne County history. He passed a record set by Woody Austin in 1988. Even with all his success, he didn't get an offer from a top college until his senior year. He decided to play college basketball for Texas Christian University (TCU).

Desmond Bane quickly made an impact at TCU. He was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week as a freshman. He scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in one game. He also helped TCU beat the number one team, Kansas. He scored 16 points in that big win.

As a freshman, Bane helped TCU win the NIT tournament. He scored nine points in the championship game. He averaged 7.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game that year.

In his second year, Bane averaged 12.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He was very good at shooting three-pointers, making 47.2% of them. This was the best in the Big 12 conference.

As a junior, Bane was named to the second-team All-Big 12. He scored a career-high 34 points in a game against Texas. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He also shot 42.5% from beyond the arc. After this season, he thought about joining the NBA draft. But he decided to return to TCU for his senior year.

In his senior year, Bane was named to the first-team All-Big 12. He averaged 16.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. His three-point accuracy was still excellent at 44.2%. He was named Big 12 player of the week in March 2020. This was after he scored 23 points in a big win against second-ranked Baylor.

Professional Basketball Career

Starting with the Memphis Grizzlies (2020–2025)

The Boston Celtics picked Desmond Bane as the 30th player in the 2020 NBA draft. He was the first TCU player picked in the first round since 1995. Soon after, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies officially signed him in November 2020.

After his first season, Bane was chosen for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He had a very high three-point shooting percentage for a rookie. It was the best since Stephen Curry's rookie year.

On December 5, 2021, Bane scored 29 points and had nine rebounds. This helped the Grizzlies win against the Dallas Mavericks. Bane also won the Clorox Clutch Challenge at the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend. On March 23, 2022, Bane set a new record for the Grizzlies. He made the most three-pointers in a single season for the team.

In the 2022 NBA playoffs, Bane played a big role. He scored 34 points in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He helped the Grizzlies win that series and move to the next round. Bane made 27 three-pointers in that series. This set a new team record for three-pointers in a single postseason. The Grizzlies were later eliminated by the Golden State Warriors.

On October 24, 2022, Bane scored a career-high 38 points. This was in a win against the Brooklyn Nets. In November, he hurt his right big toe. He returned to play in December.

In the 2023 NBA playoffs, Bane scored a playoff career-high 36 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. Two days later, he had 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in another game. The Grizzlies lost that series. After the 2022–23 season, Bane signed a huge contract with the Grizzlies. It was for five years and $207 million. This was the largest contract in Grizzlies history.

On December 6, 2023, Bane scored a career-high 49 points. He also had six rebounds and eight assists in a win against the Detroit Pistons. He became one of only two Grizzlies players to achieve such high numbers in a game.

Bane fully participated in training camp on October 2, 2024. He had been dealing with a back injury. On March 3, 2025, Bane achieved his first career triple-double. He had 35 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This was in a close game against the Atlanta Hawks.

Joining the Orlando Magic (2025–present)

On June 15, 2025, Desmond Bane was traded to the Orlando Magic. In return, the Grizzlies received Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and several future draft picks. This included the 16th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
