Lac Desprez is a freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It is part of a larger water system. This system flows into Ruisseau à John and then into the Malbaie River.
The lake is located in a wild area called Lalemant. This area is within the Le Fjord-du-Saguenay Regional County Municipality. It is also part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec.
Small forest roads help people reach the Lac Desprez area. These roads connect to Route 381. Route 381 runs north and south along the Ha! Ha! River. These roads are used for forestry and for fun activities like hiking.
The main job in this area is forestry, which means cutting down trees. Tourism, like visiting for recreation, is the second most important activity.
The surface of the lake usually freezes in early December. It stays frozen until the end of March. It is generally safe to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.
Where is Lac Desprez?
Lac Desprez is about 4.8 km (3.0 mi) north of a special border. This border separates the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Capitale-Nationale regions.
Many other rivers and lakes are close to Lac Desprez. Here are some of the main ones:
- North side: Lac Charny, Lac Éloigné, Brébeuf Lake, Pierre Lake, Lac des Cèdres, and the Saguenay River.
- East side: Lac Travers, Cami River, Épinglette Stream, and rivière à la Catin.

Size and Shape of the Lake
Lac Desprez is 2.8 km (1.7 mi) long. It has a shape that looks a bit like a cucumber. The widest part of the lake is 0.4 km (0.25 mi). The lake is about 425 m (1,394 ft) above sea level.
The water flows out of Lac Desprez from its northwest side. This exit point is:
- 3.0 km (1.9 mi) west of the Cami River's starting lake.
- 3.8 km (2.4 mi) north-east of where Ruisseau à John meets the Malbaie River.
- 8.7 km (5.4 mi) west of Huard Lake.
- 15.9 km (9.9 mi) south of Brébeuf Lake.
- North of the village of Ferland in Ferland-et-Boilleau.
- 52.6 km (32.7 mi) south-east of downtown Saguenay (city).
- 57.4 km (35.7 mi) north-east of where the Malbaie River flows into the Saint Lawrence River.
How the Water Flows
From the mouth of Lac Desprez, the water travels:
- Down Ruisseau à John for 4.4 km (2.7 mi) towards the southeast.
- Then, it flows down the Malbaie River to the east. The Malbaie River eventually empties into the Saint Lawrence River.
What's in a Name?
The name "Desprez" comes from an old family name. It means "the meadows." This word itself comes from the Latin word "pratum," which also means meadow.
The name "Lac Desprez" was officially recognized on December 12, 1985. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
