Where the River Flows
The Devils River ends by flowing into Thunder Bay. This bay is part of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes. The river's mouth is close to a small town called Ossineke.
The River's Branches
The Devils River has two main parts, like two arms joining together:
North Branch
The north branch of the river starts from Devils Lake. This lake is located a few miles northwest of Ossineke. The water from the lake flows out to form this part of the river.
South Branch
The south branch begins in northern Alcona County. This area is near a community called Spruce. The south branch flows mostly north and east. It joins the north branch near Ossineke, just 2.4 miles (3.9 km) before the river reaches Lake Huron.
For about 2 miles (3.2 km), the south branch of the river flows very close to U.S. Highway 23. This highway then crosses both the south and north branches near Ossineke.
History of the River Area
A long time ago, an Ojibwe village was located right where the Devils River meets Thunder Bay. This area was special because of two large "image stones." These stones were important landmarks. The name of the nearby town, Ossineke, comes from an Ojibwe phrase. It means "Where the image stones stood," referring to these ancient stones.
