Devon Kershaw (born December 20, 1982) is a Canadian cross-country skier. He competed from 2005 until he retired in 2018. Devon grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

He enjoyed many sports before choosing to focus on cross-country skiing. A big moment in his career was finishing second overall in the World Cup in the 2011-2012 season. He also won a World Champion title in 2011. This was for the men's team sprint with his teammate Alex Harvey in Oslo, Norway.

Early Life and Sports

Devon Kershaw grew up in Sudbury, a city in Northern Ontario. His parents, Will and Maureen, helped him love nature and an active life. Devon was very keen on sports when he was young.

He played hockey, volleyball, badminton, and tennis. He also ran in races.

Skiing as a Youngster

Devon skied for Laurentian Nordic when he was young. He took part in three World Junior Championships. These were in 2000, 2001, and 2002. He won 18 National Junior Medals.

Later, he moved to Canmore, Alberta. This is where Canada's National Ski Team trains. He went there to follow his dreams in skiing.

Devon's Skiing Career

Devon Kershaw had many great moments in his career. He was the first Canadian male cross-country skier to win a medal in the sprint category. This happened on March 7, 2006, in Borlänge, Sweden. He placed third in the Freestyle Sprint.

In November 2006, he made history again. He finished second in a World Cup race in Finland. This was the best finish for a Canadian male in over 10 years.

Tour de Ski Highlights

During the first Tour de Ski in 2006–2007, Devon came in second in the first stage. This was the Freestyle Sprint. Sadly, he got sick and could not finish the Tour.

In the 2011 Tour de Ski, Devon won one of the sprint stages. He beat famous skiers like Dario Cologna and Petter Northug. In the 2012 Tour de Ski, he finished fourth overall. This was the best a Canadian had ever done in that event.

World Championships and Olympics

In the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf, he finished 14th in the individual sprint. In 2009, Devon and the Canadian team finished sixth in the 4 x 10 km relay. This was the highest place ever for the Canadian Team.

At the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, Devon had his best individual finish. He came in fifth in the 50 km race. He also placed fourth in the team sprint with Alex Harvey. This was the best Olympic result for Canadian men in cross-country skiing.

In the Oslo 2011 World Championship, Devon and Alex Harvey won the gold medal. This was in the team sprint. It was Canada's first ever gold medal in this event. It was also Canada's second World Championship medal ever.

Best Season Ever

Devon Kershaw had his best season in 2011-2012. He finished second overall in the World Cup standings. He stood on the podium six times in World Cup races. He earned two gold medals, one silver, and three bronze.

Personal Life

Devon Kershaw is the oldest of three children. His sister, Linnaea, studies journalism in Vancouver. His brother, Sean, studies Art History in Montreal.

Devon is married to Norwegian cross-country skier Kristin Størmer Steira. They have been together since December 2012. They got married in July 2015. They have one daughter, who was born in 2017.

Devon plans to go back to school after his skiing career. He wants to study medicine. His goal is to become a doctor who helps athletes with sports injuries.
