Dario Cologna (born March 11, 1986) is a famous Swiss cross-country skier. He has won many big awards. These include four gold medals at the Winter Olympics. He also won one gold medal at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Plus, he won the overall World Cup four times. He also won the Tour de Ski four times.

Dario announced he would stop professional skiing after the 2021–2022 season.

Dario Cologna's Early Life

Dario Cologna grew up speaking Rumantsch. He was born in Santa Maria Val Müstair, Switzerland. His parents came from Italy. His father, Remo, is from Val di Non. His mother, Christine, is from Stelvio/Stilfs.

Dario has citizenship in both Italy and Switzerland. His older brother, Gianluca Cologna, is also a skier.

Starting His Skiing Journey

In 2006, Dario Cologna won a bronze medal. This was at the Junior World Championships in Slovenia. He started competing in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup in November 2006. He earned his first points in March 2007. During the 2007–08 season, he finished in the top ten four times.

First Big Wins

In December 2008, Dario got his first World Cup podium. He finished second in a 30-kilometer race. On December 27, he won his first World Cup race. This was a 15 km classic pursuit event. He then won the entire Tour de Ski in January 2009. He finished almost a minute ahead of the next best skier.

Dario also won the overall 2008–09 World Cup title. He had two first-place finishes and three other podium spots.

Olympic Gold Medals

Dario Cologna won a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He won the men's 15km freestyle event. He was the first Swiss person to win a cross-country skiing gold at the Winter Olympics.

He won the 2010–11 FIS Cross-Country World Cup. He won four races and had six other podium finishes. He also won the 2010–11 Tour de Ski.

During the 2011–12 season, Dario won eight races. He also had twelve other podium finishes. This means he was in the top three twenty times. This is a record for most podiums in one season. In January 2012, he won his third Tour de Ski. He was the only male skier to do this three times.

At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme, Dario won the 30 km pursuit race.

He won another gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. This was for the 30 km skiathlon. Later, he won the 15 km race, defending his title from the Vancouver Olympics.

More Tour de Ski and Olympic Success

Dario Cologna won his fourth Tour de Ski title in 2017–18. He won two stages of the Tour. He finished more than a minute ahead of the second-place skier. He is one of only two athletes to win the Tour de Ski four times.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Dario won the 15 kilometer freestyle. He became the first cross-country skier to win three 15 km Olympic events in a row. In March 2018, he became the first Swiss person to win the famous Holmenkollen 50 km race.

He received the Holmenkollen Medal in 2021. This is a very special award in skiing.
