Devon Anthony Travis (born February 21, 1991) is an American professional baseball coach and former second baseman. He played for the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2015 to 2018. Before that, he was first picked by the Detroit Tigers. After his playing career, Travis started coaching in 2021 with the GCL Braves.

Early Baseball Days

Devon Travis played in the 2003 Little League World Series when he was young. His team from Boynton Beach, Florida finished second. They lost to a team from Tokyo, Japan.

He went to Palm Beach Central High School in Wellington, Florida. Later, he played college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles. In 2010, he also played summer baseball for the Bourne Braves. This was part of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Becoming a Pro Player

Playing for the Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers chose Devon Travis in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB draft. He began his pro career with the Connecticut Tigers. He hit well, with a batting average of .280. He also hit three home runs.

In 2013, Travis played for the West Michigan Whitecaps. He was named the MVP of the Midwest League All-Star Game. He then moved up to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He continued to hit very well. After the season, he was named the Tigers Minor League Player of the Year. He also played in the Arizona Fall League. In 2014, he played for the Erie SeaWolves. He hit .298 with 10 home runs.

Joining the Toronto Blue Jays

First Years with the Blue Jays (2014-2015)

On November 12, 2014, Travis was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He was traded for outfielder Anthony Gose. In early 2015, he was seen as one of the best young second basemen. He was also a top prospect for the Blue Jays.

After playing well in spring training, Travis became the Blue Jays' starting second baseman. He made his MLB debut on April 6, 2015. In his first game, he hit a home run. On April 12, he hit a three-run double. This helped the Blue Jays win a close game.

Travis was named the American League Rookie of the Month for April. He had a great start, hitting six home runs. He also had 19 runs batted in (RBI). On May 3, he hit his first career grand slam.

Travis faced some injuries during the 2015 season. He had a left shoulder injury. He was placed on the disabled list twice. On September 17, the Blue Jays said he would miss the rest of the season. He needed surgery on his shoulder. He finished 2015 with a .304 batting average. He also had eight home runs and 35 RBI. In November, he had another shoulder surgery. Doctors fixed a bone issue in his shoulder.

Later Seasons (2016-2019)

In April 2016, Travis started playing again. He played rehab games in the minor leagues. On May 25, he returned to the Blue Jays. On May 28, he hit a "walk-off" single. This means his hit won the game for the Blue Jays. On August 5, he hit two home runs in one game. This was a first for him. He finished 2016 hitting .300 with 11 home runs.

Travis played in the 2016 playoffs. However, he hurt his right knee. He missed most of the playoff games. In October, he had knee surgery. Doctors removed a small piece of cartilage.

Travis had a tough start to the 2017 season. But he improved in May. On May 26, he hit his second career grand slam. He also set a team record for extra-base hits by a second baseman in a month. On June 6, he went on the disabled list again. This was due to another knee injury. He had surgery and missed the rest of the 2017 season. He only played in 50 games that year.

In 2018, Travis signed a new contract with the Blue Jays. He struggled early in the season. He was sent down to the minor leagues. But he was called back up in May. He played in 103 games that year. He hit .232 with 11 home runs.

In 2019, Travis had another knee injury. He had surgery in March to fix a torn meniscus. On November 4, 2019, he was removed from the Blue Jays roster. He then became a free agent. This meant he could sign with any team.

After Playing Baseball

On March 30, 2021, Devon Travis became a coach. He joined the GCL Braves. This is a team in the minor leagues for the Atlanta Braves.

Family Life

Devon has a younger brother named Jordan Travis. Jordan is a quarterback for the New York Jets in football.
