Devon Anthony Travis, born on February 21, 1991, is an American professional baseball coach. He used to be a second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He started his MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015 and played for them until 2018. Before that, the Detroit Tigers drafted him. After his playing career, Travis became a coach for the GCL Braves in 2021.

Early Baseball Days

Devon Travis played in the 2003 Little League World Series when he was 12 years old. He represented his hometown team from Boynton Beach, Florida. His team did very well, finishing as the runner-up in the whole tournament. They lost to the team from Tokyo, Japan.

After Little League, Travis went to Palm Beach Central High School in Wellington, Florida. He then went on to play college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles at Florida State University. In 2010, he also played summer baseball for the Bourne Braves. This was part of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Professional Baseball Career

Starting with the Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers picked Devon Travis in the 13th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. He began his professional journey with the Connecticut Tigers. There, he hit well, with a .280 batting average. He also hit three home runs and had 11 runs batted in (RBI) in 25 games.

In 2013, Travis played for the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Midwest League All-Star Game. He hit a three-run triple in that game. Because he played so well, hitting .352 with six home runs, he was moved up to the High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. He continued to hit well there, with a .350 average and 10 home runs. After the season, he was named the Tigers Minor League Player of the Year. In 2014, he played for the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. He batted .298 with 10 home runs and 52 RBI in 100 games.

On November 12, 2014, Devon Travis was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He was traded for an outfielder named Anthony Gose. In early 2015, experts said he was one of the best second base prospects. He was also a top prospect for the Blue Jays.

Travis had a great spring training. Because of this, he was chosen as the Blue Jays' starting second baseman for the 2015 season. He made his MLB debut on April 6, 2015. In his very first game, he hit his first career home run off Chasen Shreve of the New York Yankees. He also walked twice and scored two runs, helping the Blue Jays win.

On April 12, Travis hit a three-run double against the Baltimore Orioles. This helped the Blue Jays win 10–7. He was named the American League Rookie of the Month for April. He had a .325 batting average, six home runs, and 19 RBIs that month.

Injuries and Comebacks

Travis faced some challenges with injuries during his time with the Blue Jays. In May 2015, he hit his first career grand slam against the Cleveland Indians. However, he then had to go on the disabled list because of a left shoulder injury. He returned in June but re-injured his shoulder in July. He had surgery on his shoulder in November 2015 to fix a bone issue.

In 2016, Travis worked hard to recover. He started playing in minor league games in May. He was called back up to the Blue Jays on May 25. On May 28, he hit a game-winning single against the Boston Red Sox. On August 5, he hit two home runs in one game for the first time in his career. He finished the 2016 season with a .300 batting average, 11 home runs, and 50 RBI.

Travis played in the 2016 postseason games. However, he had to leave the American League Championship Series due to a knee injury. He had surgery on his right knee in November 2016.

In 2017, Travis started slowly but improved in May. He hit his second career grand slam on May 26 against the Texas Rangers. This set a team record for extra-base hits by a second baseman in a month. Unfortunately, he went on the disabled list again in June 2017 due to another bone bruise in his right knee. He had surgery and did not return for the rest of the season. He played in only 50 games that year.

In 2018, Travis signed a new contract with the Blue Jays. He played in 103 games, hitting .232 with 11 home runs. In 2019 spring training, he had left knee inflammation. He had surgery in March 2019 to repair a torn meniscus. On November 4, 2019, Travis was removed from the Blue Jays roster. He then became a free agent.
