Dexter is a small village located in Jefferson County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,004 people lived there.
The village got its name from Simon Newton Dexter. He was one of the people who owned parts of the village when it was being developed. Dexter is in the southern part of the town of Brownville. It is also west of the city of Watertown.

History of Dexter Village
The area where Dexter is now was once called Fish Island. It was part of the land owned by Jacob and John Brown. Later, the village was renamed Dexter to honor Simon Newton Dexter.
Dexter officially became an incorporated village in 1855. At that time, it had about 528 people living there.
A special building in the village, the Dexter Universalist Church, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it is an important historical site.
Geography and Location
Dexter is in the west-central part of Jefferson County. Its exact location is 44°00′30″N 76°02′43″W / 44.008264°N 76.045363°W. The village covers a total area of about 2.0 square kilometers (0.72 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The village is right next to the Black River. It is also very close to Black River Bay, which is connected to Lake Ontario. South of the river, the town of Hounsfield borders Dexter.
Roads and Travel
New York State Route 180 runs through Dexter. This highway goes north to Limerick (about 1.5 miles away). It goes south to NY-3 near Sackets Harbor (about 3.5 miles away).
Watertown, which is the main town for Jefferson County, is about 7 miles east. You can get there by taking Routes 180 and 12F. Other local roads, County Roads 53 and 59, also help people get around the community.
