Hounsfield is a town located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 3,466 people lived there. The town was named after Ezra Hounsfield, who owned land in the southern part of the area. Augustus Sacket chose the name for the town.
Hounsfield is in the western part of Jefferson County. It is located west of the city of Watertown.

History of Hounsfield
Early Settlers and Town Formation
The first people to settle in the area that is now Hounsfield arrived around the year 1800. A man named Augustus Sackett bought the land for the town on June 20, 1801. He worked hard to help the town grow and attract more people to live there.
Hounsfield officially became a town on February 17, 1806. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Watertown.
Hounsfield and the War of 1812
The town and its people played a big part in the War of 1812. This was mainly because two important battles happened nearby at Sackets Harbor. Sackets Harbor is a community within Hounsfield.
In 1814, Sackets Harbor became its own separate village. It is located by Black River Bay.

Notable People from Hounsfield
Hounsfield has been home to several important people:
- Samuel Guthrie (1782–1848) was a doctor. He helped discover chloroform, which is used in medicine. He also invented a special compound for firearms that made them work better. See a photo of his house here.
- Marsena R. Patrick (1811–1888) was a general in the American Civil War. He served as the provost marshal for the Army of Potomac.
- Veranus Alva Moore (1859–1931) was a bacteriologist and pathologist. These are scientists who study tiny living things and diseases.
- William Van Waters was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, which is part of the government in Wisconsin.

Land and Water Areas
Hounsfield covers a total area of about 311.8 square kilometers (120.4 square miles). A large part of this area is water. About 126.7 square kilometers (48.9 square miles) is land. The remaining 185.2 square kilometers (71.5 square miles), which is about 59% of the total area, is water.
Natural Features
The northeastern border of Hounsfield is formed by the Black River. The western border of the town is along Lake Ontario. Mill Creek flows into Black River Bay near Sackets Harbor.
Roads and Transportation
Two main roads pass through Hounsfield:
- New York State Route 3 is a highway that runs north and south in the western part of the town.
- Interstate 81 crosses the southeastern corner of Hounsfield.
