History of Dickinson
The area was first going to be called "Annastown." This name was for the daughter of a local landowner. But another important landowner, Jonathan Dayton, wanted to name the town after his friend. His friend was Philemon Dickinson, who was also a member of Congress. So, the town was named Dickinson.
The town of Dickinson was officially created in 1809. It was formed from a part of the town of Malone. Later, in 1812, some of Dickinson's land was used to create the town of Bangor. More land was taken from Dickinson to form other towns. This happened when Moira was created in 1828. Then, Waverly was formed in 1880. So, Dickinson became smaller over time.
In 1843, some people in the town became followers of the Mormon faith. Because of this, some families moved west to new areas. This happened because relatives of a Mormon leader lived in Dickinson.
