History of Diego Hernández
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area of the U.S. that is not a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Diego Hernández and another barrio called Susúa Alta together had 1,171 residents.
