Dieter Burdenski (born 26 November 1950 – died 9 October 2024) was a famous German football player. He was a fantastic goalkeeper for many years.

About Dieter Burdenski
Dieter Burdenski was born in Bremen, Germany. His father, Herbert Burdenski, was also a famous football player. Herbert even scored the very first goal for West Germany after World War II! Dieter passed away in Bremen on 9 October 2024, when he was 73 years old.
Dieter's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Dieter Burdenski began playing football at STV Horst-Emscher. As a teenager, he joined Schalke 04. He played three Bundesliga matches for them in the 1970–1971 season.
One of these matches was later investigated by the German Football Association. Dieter was found not guilty of any wrongdoing. He then moved to Arminia Bielefeld in 1971. He became their main goalkeeper.
Time at Werder Bremen
In 1972, Dieter joined Werder Bremen. He became their regular goalkeeper from 1973. He stayed with the team for a very long time.
Dieter played 478 Bundesliga matches for Werder Bremen. He even scored one goal himself! This happened from a penalty kick in 1979. His father, Herbert, also managed Werder Bremen for a short time in 1975–76.
Dieter retired from playing in 1988. Werder Bremen later made him an honorary captain in 2005.
Playing After Retirement
After retiring, Dieter was convinced to play again! He played one match for AIK in Sweden. He also played three games for Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands.
At Vitesse, he made his debut in the Eredivisie league at age 39. This made him the oldest player to debut in that league. In 2002, at 51 years old, he even played one more match for SV Werder Bremen II. This was because the team needed a goalkeeper due to injuries.
Playing for His Country
Dieter Burdenski played for the West Germany national team. He earned 12 caps (played 12 matches) for his country. His first game was in 1977 against Uruguay.
He was part of the squad for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. He also played in qualifiers for the 1980 UEFA European Championship. He was also on the bench for the 1984 UEFA European Championship. His last game for West Germany was in 1984 against Italy.
How He Played
Dieter Burdenski was not the tallest goalkeeper, but he was very athletic. He was known for being a superb shot stopper. He had amazing reactions to save goals. Dieter was also a great leader on the field. He was captain of Werder Bremen many times.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Dieter Burdenski became a coach. In 1997, he rejoined Werder Bremen. He worked as a goalkeeper coach for the club. He continued in this role until December 2005.
