Dilawar Khan was an important ruler in Central India. He started as a governor for the Delhi Sultanate in 1392. Later, he became the very first Sultan of the Malwa Sultanate. This happened when the Delhi Sultanate was becoming weaker.
Dilawar Khan was first appointed governor in a city called Dhar around 1390–91. In 1401–02, he decided to become independent. He took the special title of 'Amid Shāh Dā'ūd. He also had the khutba (a special sermon) read in his own name. This meant he was now the independent ruler, or Sultan, of the Malwa Sultanate. When he died in 1406, his son, Hoshang Shah, took over the kingdom.
Dilawar Khan's Early Life and Support
Dilawar Khan was a loyal supporter of Firuz Shah Tughluq's son. This son was known as Muhammad ibn Firuz. He later became Sultan Muhammad Shah. Because Dilawar Khan supported this prince, he was put in jail by other officials in Delhi.
Many other important governors also supported Prince Muhammad Shah. These included the governor of Gujarat. Other powerful nobles at the court also believed the prince should be the ruler.
A Friend in Need
In 1398, a powerful invader named Timur attacked Delhi. The Sultan of Delhi at that time was the same Prince Muhammad Shah. He had to run away from the capital city. He first tried to find safety in the Gujarat Sultanate. But he did not get a warm welcome there.
So, Sultan Muhammad Shah moved to the Malwa region. Dilawar Khan welcomed him with open arms. He told the Sultan that his entire kingdom and all his treasures were there to help him. Dilawar Khan even went to war against the Jaunpur Sultanate. This was after its founder, Malik Sarwar, also declared himself independent from Delhi. However, Dilawar Khan's forces were defeated and had to retreat.
