Dirksland is a charming village located in the western Netherlands. It's part of Goeree-Overflakkee Island in the province of South Holland. Dirksland used to be its own municipality, which is like a local government area.
In 2007, about 8,000 people lived in the former municipality of Dirksland. It covered an area of about 74 square kilometers, with a good portion of that being water. The communities of Herkingen and Melissant were also part of this area.
On January 1, 2013, Dirksland joined with other towns. These included Goedereede, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee. Together, they formed the new, larger municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee.
About Dirksland
Dirksland is a special place on the island. It sits a bit higher than other areas. This higher ground helped protect it during the North Sea flood of 1953. While many parts of the island faced a lot of damage, Dirksland was not as badly affected.
What Makes Dirksland Special?
Dirksland is the biggest of the three communities that were once part of its municipality. It's also home to the only hospital on the entire Goeree-Overflakkee island. This hospital is called Van Weel-Bethesda. It's one of the smallest hospitals in the country, but it has a great reputation for its care.
You can spot Dirksland from far away because of its very tall water tower. This tower is actually the tallest water tower in the Netherlands!
The towns around Dirksland are mostly focused on farming. There are also several campgrounds nearby. These are perfect for people who want a quiet vacation. They offer a peaceful escape, but are still close to the coast.
Dirksland also has an inland harbor. This harbor features a gate complex that has been recently restored. It's a nice spot to visit and see the boats.
