Club Career Highlights
Playing for Liverpool
Traoré began his football journey at his home club, Laval, before moving to Liverpool. He played his first game for Liverpool on 14 September 1999. It was a big 5–1 win against Hull City in the League Cup.
In the 2001–02 season, Traoré spent some time on loan at Lens in France. He played 19 games there. He then came back to Liverpool for the 2002–03 season. During this time, he scored his first and only goal for Liverpool in the UEFA Cup against Steaua București.
For the 2003–04 season, Traoré was the captain of Liverpool's reserve team. He almost left the club to join their rivals, Everton. However, the new manager, Rafael Benítez, convinced him to stay. Benítez helped Traoré improve his game, especially his defensive positioning and willingness to attack from the left side.
During the 2004–05 FA Cup, Traoré had an unlucky moment. He accidentally scored an own goal against Burnley, which led to Liverpool losing the game 1–0.
Despite this, Traoré remained an important player for Liverpool. He even started in the 2005 Champions League Final against Milan. In that famous match, Liverpool came back from being 3–0 down to draw 3–3. Traoré made a crucial save on the goal line, stopping a shot that could have won the game for Milan. Liverpool then won the match on penalties, and Traoré earned a Champions League medal!
In the 2005–06 season, Traoré played fewer games as other players also competed for his position. He was a substitute when Liverpool won the 2006 FA Cup Final against West Ham United. This was his last season with Liverpool. In August 2006, he moved to Charlton Athletic.
Time at Charlton and Portsmouth
Traoré's time at Charlton Athletic started with a red card in his first game. After only half a season, he moved to Portsmouth.
Loan to Birmingham City
In February 2009, Traoré joined Birmingham City on a short loan. He played three games for them before his loan ended.
Playing for Monaco
On 18 June 2009, Traoré signed a two-year contract with Monaco in France. He played 36 league games for them.
Time at Marseille
In August 2011, Traoré signed a one-year deal with another French club, Marseille. He was part of the team that won the 2012 Coupe de la Ligue Final (a French cup competition). He left the club at the end of that season.
Playing for Seattle Sounders
On 23 February 2013, Traoré moved to the United States to play for MLS club Seattle Sounders. He scored his first goal for the club in an amazing way. It was a powerful shot from far away that hit the crossbar and went in! This goal helped Seattle Sounders make history. They became the first MLS club to beat a Mexican team in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Traoré scored his first league goal for Seattle on 8 May 2013. It was a winning goal in the very last minute of the game! He retired from playing football at the end of the 2014 season.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Djimi Traoré became an assistant coach for the Seattle Sounders. He worked there until August 2021. Since then, he has been a coach for the Right to Dream Academy, helping young players develop their skills.
