Dmitri Fyodorovich Egorov (Russian: Дми́трий Фёдорович Его́ров; December 22, 1869 – September 10, 1931) was an important Russian and Soviet mathematician. He is known for his work in differential geometry and mathematical analysis. Egorov also served as the President of the Moscow Mathematical Society from 1923 to 1930.

Life of Dmitri Egorov

Dmitri Egorov believed his spiritual faith was very important. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, he openly supported the Church. This was at a time when some people were against religious groups.

He became the president of the Moscow Mathematical Society in 1921. In 1923, he also became the director of the Institute for Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University. Egorov also helped edit the journal Matematicheskii Sbornik.

However, because Egorov stood up for the Russian Orthodox Church, he faced difficulties. He was removed from his director position in 1929. In 1930, he was arrested and put in prison. He was also removed from the Moscow Mathematical Society. While in prison, Egorov started a hunger strike. He was later moved to a hospital and then to the home of another mathematician, Nikolai Chebotaryov, where he passed away. He was buried in Arskoe Cemetery in Kazan.

Dmitri Egorov's Research Work

Egorov studied special mathematical ideas like potential surfaces. He also worked on triply orthogonal systems. His research greatly helped the fields of differential geometry and integral equations.

His work was influenced by other famous mathematicians. He learned from Jean Gaston Darboux in differential geometry. He also learned from Henri Lebesgue in mathematical analysis. A very important idea in mathematics, called Egorov's Theorem, is named after him. This theorem is used in real analysis and integration theory.
