Dominique Thorne (born November 5, 1997) is an American actress. She is best known for playing Riri Williams / Ironheart in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You might have seen her as Ironheart in the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). She will also star in her own Disney+ TV series called Ironheart (2025). Before joining Marvel, Dominique appeared in films like If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and Judas and the Black Messiah (2021). In 2024, she also starred in the film Freaky Tales.
Growing Up
Dominique Thorne was born on November 5, 1997, in New York City. Her parents moved to the U.S. from Trinidad and Tobago. She has two brothers.
Dominique went to the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan (PPAS). There, she studied acting. In her last year of high school, she won two big awards. These were the 2015 Young Arts Award in Spoken Theater and the U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. The White House gives this special award every year.
After high school, Dominique chose to attend Cornell University. She joined a sorority called Delta Sigma Theta in 2018. A sorority is a social and academic group for women in college. In 2019, she earned her degree in Human Development. This field studies how people grow and change. She also studied Inequality Studies, which looks at fairness in society. Before she graduated, she became a member of the Sphinx Head honors society. This is a secret group for top students. As of 2020, Dominique and her family live in Atlanta.
Her Acting Career
Dominique Thorne started her film career in 2018. She played Shelia Hunt in the movie If Beale Street Could Talk. This film was based on a famous book by James Baldwin. In 2021, she played Judy Harmon in the movie Judas and the Black Messiah. Judy Harmon was a member of the Black Panthers, a political group.
In 2016, Dominique tried out for a role in the 2018 Marvel movie Black Panther. She auditioned to play Shuri. She even did screen tests with actor Chadwick Boseman. However, the role eventually went to Letitia Wright.
Later, in 2020, Dominique was chosen to play Riri Williams / Ironheart. This role is for the Disney+ TV series Ironheart. Because she had already auditioned for Marvel before, she got this role without needing to try out again. She first appeared as Riri in the 2022 movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. A producer named Nate Moore said that when Marvel Studios was looking for Riri Williams, Dominique was their "first and only call."
