Don Lemon (born March 1, 1966) is an American television journalist. He is well-known for his work as a host on CNN from 2014 until 2023. Before joining CNN, he worked as a news correspondent for NBC. He appeared on popular shows like Today and NBC Nightly News.

Don Lemon has received several awards for his reporting. In 2002, he won an Edward R. Murrow Award. This was for his coverage of the capture of the Washington, D.C. snipers. He also earned three regional Emmy Awards. These awards were for special reports on real estate and a business story about Craigslist. He joined CNN in 2006 and became a prominent host. He hosted Don Lemon Tonight from 2014 to 2022. Later, he was a co-host of CNN This Morning. His time at CNN ended in April 2023.

Early Life and Education

Don Lemon was born on March 1, 1966. His birthplace was Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Baker High School in Baker, Louisiana. During his senior year, his classmates voted him class president.

After high school, Lemon went to Louisiana State University. He later graduated from Brooklyn College in 1996. He earned a degree in broadcast journalism. While studying at Brooklyn College, he gained experience by interning at WNYW. He also worked for Fox and NBC news stations in different cities.

Career in Journalism

Don Lemon has had a long career in television news. He started as a reporter in local news.

Early Reporting Jobs

Early in his career, Lemon worked as a weekend news anchor. He reported for WBRC in Birmingham, Alabama. He also worked for WCAU in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For several years, he was an anchor and investigative reporter for Fox stations. These included KTVI in St. Louis, Missouri, and a Fox station in Chicago.

Lemon also reported for NBC News in New York City. He was a correspondent for Today and NBC Nightly News. He also anchored Weekend Today and other programs on MSNBC. In 2003, he joined WMAQ-TV in Chicago. There, he was a reporter and local news co-anchor. He won three Emmys for his local reporting while at WMAQ.

Working at CNN (2006–2023)

Lemon joined CNN in September 2006. He became well-known for his direct style of reporting.

In 2014, CNN started trying out new shows with Lemon as host. One of these was The Eleventh Hour. After the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Lemon hosted a special nightly program. It featured discussions and analysis about the event. This led to him becoming the permanent host of CNN Tonight with Don Lemon. Lemon also helped host CNN's New Year's Eve Live. He often reported from a city in the Central Time Zone.

In May 2021, Lemon launched a podcast called The Handoff. He co-hosted it with fellow CNN journalist Chris Cuomo. The podcast focused on politics and personal stories. In February 2022, CNN announced Lemon would host a talk show. It was for CNN's streaming service, CNN+. The show was called The Don Lemon Show.

On September 15, 2022, CNN announced a new morning show. Lemon would co-anchor it with Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow. On October 12, 2022, the show was named CNN This Morning. Lemon's time on the show ended in April 2023.

Departure from CNN

Don Lemon left CNN in April 2023. This happened on the same day that another well-known news anchor, Tucker Carlson, left Fox News.

Awards and Recognition

Don Lemon has received many honors throughout his career.

  • In 2002, he won an Edward R. Murrow Award. This was for his reporting on the capture of the D.C. area sniper. He also won awards for his reports on Hurricane Katrina.
  • In 2006, he earned three Chicago / Midwest Emmy Awards. One was for a business story about Craigslist real estate listings. The other two were for reporting on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa.

In 2009, Ebony magazine named Lemon one of the 150 most influential African Americans. In 2014, The Advocate listed him as one of the 50 Most Influential LGBTQ People in Media. In December 2016, Lemon received a Native Son Award. This award recognizes and encourages the visibility of black gay men in society. In 2017, Out magazine included him on its Power 50 list. This list features the most influential LGBTQ people in the USA.

In June 2019, Queerty named him one of the Pride50. This was to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The Pride50 list honors individuals who work for equality and acceptance for all queer people.

Personal Life

Don Lemon lives in an apartment in Harlem, New York. He also has another home in Sag Harbor on Long Island.

Lemon met real estate agent Tim Malone in 2016. They began dating and later married on April 6, 2024. The wedding took place in New York City.
