Don W. Pellum (born January 26, 1962) is an American former college football coach. He worked with many teams, helping players learn and grow. His last coaching job was as the linebackers coach for the UCLA Bruins football team.
Don Pellum's Early Life and Playing Days
Don Pellum was born in Banning, California. He loved football and became a starting linebacker for the Oregon Ducks team. He played for them from 1980 to 1984.
While playing football, Don also studied hard at the University of Oregon. He earned degrees in subjects like telecommunications (how we send messages) and film (making movies). He also studied rhetoric and communications, which are about how people use language to persuade and connect. He even got a master's degree later on!
Don Pellum's Coaching Journey
Don Pellum spent a big part of his career, 23 years, coaching at the University of Oregon. He started as a graduate assistant in 1985, helping with the tight ends. Over the years, he coached different positions like safeties and defensive linemen. He spent 14 seasons as the linebackers coach.
He took a couple of breaks from Oregon. In 1987, he coached at Willamette University. He worked with the defensive line and helped players with their strength and academics.
From 1990 to 1992, Don worked at the University of California. He helped find new players as the recruiting coordinator. He also helped students as an assistant athletics director. After these experiences, he returned to the Oregon Ducks in 1993.
On January 14, 2014, Don Pellum got a big promotion at Oregon. He became the team's defensive coordinator. This meant he was in charge of the entire defense.
However, after the 2015 season, he went back to being the linebackers coach in 2016. He continued to help players improve their skills.
Don Pellum later moved to UCLA, where he coached linebackers from 2018 to 2021. He retired from coaching on February 24, 2022, after many years of helping young athletes.
